Dead Will Walk
"A New Day of Dawning"
Dawnbreed Rec. 2022
Dead Will Walk
is a fresh name on the scene, albeit formed by people who already have years of
musical experience. Admittedly, their earlier incarnations somehow never made it
under my thatch, but today I focus mainly on the here and now. As the band's
previous EP sounded quite promising, I reached for "A New Day of
Dawning" with great interest. And it was with undisguised satisfaction
that I discovered that the Dutch have made significant progress. Seemingly
revolving all the time in pure-blood death metal, they have developed and
largely refined the ideas germinating on "Unleash the Dead". The six
new compositions are a real mosaic of different factions of the genre, welded
together by a basic condition. It is the old school and omnipresent atmosphere
of the nineties. Already the first
seconds, after a short intro, grab us by the neck and throw, head down, into
the well of death metal. A well in which powerful riffing in the old fashion
reigns. There's not much originality in it, but who cares, if each successive
chord unleashes an incredible dose of adrenaline, forces you to mosh wildly and
recalls the times when the genre celebrated its greatest triumphs. Do you miss
Florida, the British Isles, maybe Stockholm? There you go, everything is laid
out here on a tray, adorned with beautiful-looking accessories. Dead Will
Walk's music has an uncanny groove to it, it's both brutal and melodic at the
same time, and it's upbeat enough that it quickly falls into the ear and by no
means flies out with the other one. The guitars carve very rhythmically, moving
smoothly from one riff to another and changing tempo quite often, the rhythm
section successively ramps up the depth and a raspy, deep, quite intelligible
growl hovers over the whole. All the material is very even, and in fact it's
hard to spoint out any of the tracks, as they're all a solid kick in the ass,
from a run-up. This kind of death metal crushed bones, smashed to a pulp and
sitting on a throne of skulls was triumphant three decades ago. This is the
kind of music I always return to most fondly, because it reminds me my
adolescence. If you love metal of death, you must not miss this material,
because it would be negligence on a high scale.
