Befouled Malediction
„Desperate Necromancy”
Ixiol Productions / Dawnbreed Records 2026
dungeon synth.
i wpędzać w jeszcze większą depresję niż przed chwilą. To rogacizna
nieźle mu to wychodzi.
chwytliwość i romantyczną atmosferę, dając pierwszeństwo ckliwej opowieści, budując
trafić bez trudu do fanów Arckanum, Sacramentum i Dissection, zatem im polecam

This
appears to be a new band from the United States, and it’s their debut album,
featuring seven tracks of melodic black metal. Man, I’ve got a hell of a
problem with this one, because I’m not into this kind of stuff, and the words
from the press release, which say that this album “Follows the story of a
sorcerer whose world falls apart after the sudden death of his beloved”. A
perfect theme for devilry, isn’t it? Well, Befouled Malediction wraps this sad
story in the genre’s traditional forms, that is, a mix of classic thrashing and
tremolo that flows at varying tempos, and besides sending chills down your
spine and delivering heavy blows, it treats you to catchy solos and
dungeon-synth-style elements. Of course, the whole thing is imbued with a
melody befitting the concept, which is presumably meant to lift the spirits of
the melancholic or to lull them into an even deeper depression than before.
It’s a dark, brooding sound generated by high-pitched guitars and a subtly
recessed rhythm section, though at times the rhythm section boldly pushes its
way to the forefront. The vocals follow the instruments, and the singer is
practically screaming his lungs out to get them out, but he pulls it off pretty
well. The Americans play black metal that lacks punch, which they don’t really
care about, because it seems to me that they prefer to focus on catchiness and
a romantic atmosphere, prioritizing a maudlin narrative and building it up
using the sounds of this dark genre for reasons unknown. The text from the
promoter, included with this material, also states that this album should
easily appeal to fans of Arckanum, Sacramentum, and Dissection, so I recommend
that they check out this release, but of course, I can’t stop anyone else from
doing so either.
