IRON CURTAIN
"Metal
Gladiator" (Ep)
Dying Victims
Productions 2023
Iron Curtain is a band formed in 2007 in Spain that
cultivates Heavy Metal traditions. To date, they have recorded four full-length
albums and quite a number of minor releases. Since their first full-length in
2012, the gentlemen have been working with Dying Victims Productions, which is
not particularly surprising given the publishing profile of this stable. In the
middle of the first quarter of Anno Bastardi 2023, the band greeted its fans
with another material. This time it's an Ep titled "Metal Gladiator,"
on which the group, perhaps logically, does what it does best, which is to
savagely riff on classic Heavy Metal grounded very deeply in the first half of
the 1980s. Energetic and pugnacious, it's music built on a foundation of
conventional, textbook-beating, powerful drums, crisp, feisty bass lines,
catchy, sharply-cut riffs underpinned by delectable solos and violent, biting,
hooky, harsh vocals. Traditional to the core, but above all unspeakably sincere,
this is hellava ride. The guys have cojones, no doubt about it, and judging by
the way they play, quite big. Over the music of Iron Curtain hovers the spirit
of early Grave Digger, Tank, Diamond Head, Iron Angel and Motörhead with a
gentle touch of the Canadian school under the sign of Anvil or Exciter. One can
hear slight sonic differences between the new and older songs (I haven't
mentioned yet that the material consists of four premiere and three tracks
already known from the group's earlier releases). However, this doesn't bother
me at all, as it's not some colossal disproportion and, for my taste, doesn't
somehow disturb the consistent, homogeneous face of this production. So let's
summarize. The material will undoubtedly appeal to any lover of old-school
Heavy Metal, so anyone with an affinity for this style should order their copy
from Dying Victims without unnecessary hesitation. For now, three formats are
available: CD, a classic black 12" vinyl and, as the label puts it, a
"special edition on ultra clear vinyl." Of course, the vinyl versions
also come with an insert, poster, sticker, postcard and download code for those
in love with the digital world, and the special option still comes with a
tasteful patch. So nothing but to pick, choose and buy.
