Bardzo dziwnie toczy się historia Morgue. Ich
najwcześniejsze nagrania zamykały się w gatunku brutal death/grind, który to
gatunek jest u mnie zdecydowanie na drugim planie. Miałem jednak okazję z
debiutem się zapoznać, i było to całkiem solidne granie. Kolejne wydawnictwa
jednym uchem mi wpadały, by za chwilę wypaść drugim. Z kolei wydany dwa lata
temu „Lowest Depths of Misery” był według mnie lekkim nieporozumieniem. Nagrać
drugi raz „to samo”? Po co? Zabieg kompletnie dla mnie niezrozumiały. Stąd też
do „Close to Complete Darkness” jakoś się nie spieszyłem, zwłaszcza, że
towarzysz Harlequin niezbyt pochlebnie się o tym materiale wyraził na łamach
Apocalyptic Rites. Ostatecznie jednak płyta ta wylądowała na moim talerzu, i…
rozłożyła mnie na łopatki. Pierwszym szokiem było to, że panowie poszli po
całości w czysty death metal. Szokiem drugim było bogactwo i dojrzałość tych
dziewięciu nowych kompozycji. Cholera! Ileż na tym albumie jest mięsistych,
staroszkolnych, niby prostych a jednocześnie kurewsko chwytliwych riffów! Jednocześnie, ileż tutaj zmian tempa,
slalomów między melodiami, powplatanych dysonansowych ozdobników i surowości.
Weźmy na warsztat taki „Disobedience”, choć zaznaczam, że utwór ten wybrałem
całkowicie randomowo. Otwiera go agresywny riff w blastującym tempie, po chwili
na scenę wpada nieco wolniejszy, pod totalny headbanging, płynnie przechodzący
w zwolnienie a’la Bolt Thrower z niesamowitą melodią. Gitarowy przerywnik i
ruszamy z powrotem do ataku frontalnego, wspartego ponownie drugą, brytyjską
linią pancerną i dysonansowym zawijasem. Finalnie gitary pomału wyciszają pole
bitwy robiąc miejsce kolejnemu utworowi. I w zasadzie którykolwiek fragment
płyty chciałbym przedstawić jako reprezentatywny dla całości, to byłoby to
niesamowicie niesprawiedliwe i zubożające. Z tej prostej przyczyny, że „Close
to Complete Darkness” jest materiałem niezwykle równym i stanowiącym
nierozerwalny monolit. Można powiedzieć, że Morgue nagrali coś w zupełnie nowym
dla siebie stylu, a jedynym nawiązaniem do przeszłości są pojawiające się w
kilku miejscach grindowe blasty. No to ja miałbym tylko jedno życzenie. By
zakotwiczyli w tym nurcie na dłużej, o ile mają oczywiście nagrywać płyty z
taką klasą. Ten krążek, przynajmniej w moim osobistym rankingu, należy do tych
z kategorii bez wad. Poza tym, o czym już wspomniałem, wspaniale to wszystko
brzmi, potężnie i organicznie. Świetne są wokale. Proste, nieprzekombinowane, w
klasycznym deathmetalowym stylu, idealnie uzupełniające się z muzyką. No i
wisienka na torcie, przynajmniej dla oka, czyli okładka. Oldschool pełną gębą,
w fantastycznym wykonaniu. Uwielbiam takie niespodzianki. Uważam, że dla
każdego maniaka death metalu ten album to absolutny mus i obowiązek. Mówiłem
już, że Morgue rozłożyło mnie na łopatki? Tak? No to się powtórzę – jestem
kompletnie rozjebany!

Morgue's story
is a very strange one. Their earliest recordings were framed in the brutal
death/grind genre, which is definitely in the background with me. I did,
however, have a chance to listen to the debut, and it was pretty decent
playing. Subsequent releases went in my one ear and out the other. And “Lowest
Depths of Misery", released two years ago, was, in my opinion, a bit of a
misunderstanding. To record ‘the same thing’ a second time? What for? A measure
completely incomprehensible to me. Hence, I was in no hurry to get to ‘Close to
Complete Darkness’, especially as comrade Harlequin was not very complimentary
about this material on Apocalyptic Rites. Eventually, however, this album
landed on my plate, and... it blew me away. The first shock was that the gents
went all the way into pure death metal. The second shock was the richness and
maturity of these nine new compositions. Damn! How many meaty, old-school,
seemingly simple yet fucking catchy riffs this album has! At the same time,
there are so many tempo changes, slaloms between melodies, dissonant ornaments
and rawness. Let's take ‘Disobedience’ for instance, although I'd like to point
out that I chose this track completely at random. It opens with an aggressive
riff at a blasting pace, after a while a slightly slower, for total headbanging
comes in, seamlessly transitioning into a Bolt Throwerish part with an amazing
melody. A guitar interlude, and we're back into the frontal attack, backed
again by a second British panzer line and a dissonant swirl. Eventually the
guitars slowly quiet the battlefield making room for the next track. And in
fact, whichever part of the album I want to present as representative of the
whole, I find out it would be incredibly unfair and impoverishing. For the
simple reason that “Close to Complete Darkness’ is remarkably equal material
and forms an inseparable monolith. It's fair to say that Morgue have recorded
something in a style completely new to them, with the only reference to the
past being the grind blasts that appear in a few places. Well, I would only
have one wish then. For them to anchor in this harbour for longer, if they are
to make records with such class, of course. This album, at least in my personal
ranking, belongs to the “flawless” category. Besides all I mentioned before,
the album sounds great. Very powerful and organic. The vocals are great.
Simple, not overdone, in the classic death metal style, perfectly complementing
the music. And the icing on the cake, at least to the eye, is the
cover. Old-school in full force, in a fantastic design. I love such surprises.
I think that for every death metal maniac this album is an absolute must. Did I
already say that Morgue got my mind blown? I did? Well I'll say it again - I'm
completely floored!
