“Flawless
Intrigue from Hell”

I was pretty
sure I’d come across the name Skumstrike before. And indeed, it was at the EP
called “Execution Void” which quickly kicked my hairy ass. I missed their
full-length debut, even though it was released by a label right here in our
backyard, but I did sit down to listen to their second album. Well,
stylistically, not much has changed for these Canadians. It’s still a wild ride
full steam ahead, often with eyes closed. An old-school ride, of course. Maybe
there’s definitely less punk here than on their earliest recordings, or maybe
the guys have simply learned to handle their instruments better over time. But
the backbone of this music is undeniably thrash. And it’s thrash that’s
absolutely brimming with energy, bubbling over in every track. That doesn’t
mean, however, that the album relies solely on blast beats. There are plenty of
those here for sure, but the center stage, take the riffs! And that’s why I
mentioned the noticeable improvement in the musicians’ skills, because whether
they’re flooring the gas pedal or only slightly exceeding the speed limit,
listening to the melodies flowing from “Flawless Intrigue from Hell” feels like
being whipped. And the lashes falling on our backs hurt more and more
with every passing moment, each one seems stronger, and each one hits the mark
perfectly. What’s more, Skumstrike’s music has this incredible, aggressive,
thrash-style groove that makes you want to dance with your fist clenched, or
even punch someone in their ugly face. The only element here that strays from
the main genre’s framework is the vocals, which are more screeching and black
metalesque than in the classics. The sound is also “blacker”, though the
overall vibe remains the same. These guys clearly love the genre’s classics
from the ’80s and ’90s, as evidenced by their cover of Abigail’s song for
“goodbye”, and they perfectly capture the spirit of those times in their music.
In fact, the title of the cover perfectly defines Skumstrike’s work itself. So
please stand up, raise your hands in the air, make the devil’s sign, and sing together:
