Kiedy za wspólną pracę wezmą się tacy artyści jak
Horthodox i Haiku Funeral, to od razu jasnym się staje, że jej wynikiem nie
będzie nic codziennego. Oba twory
gościły już wcześniej na łamach Apocalyptic Rites, zatem nawet średnio
zorientowani powinni kojarzyć, kto zacz. „Serpentine Sorcery” to, co nie dziwi,
materiał nie dla każdego. Materiał trudny i wymagający odrobiny skupienia, a na
pewno sporo cierpliwości. Z czego to wynika? No cóż, panowie stworzyli wspólnie
niemal godzinny album z gatunku dark ambient / noise. Tak przynajmniej można go
zaszufladkować, choć z drugiej strony, nie jest on taki oczywisty. Na pewno
podstawą tej muzyki są mroczne, drone’owe tła, w których królują syntezatorowe
podkłady, sample, odgłosy natury oraz z zaświatów i oszczędne wokalne dodatki.
Jak nie trudno się domyśleć, akcja „Serpentine Sorcery” toczy się bardzo
powoli. Artyści roztaczają swoje wizje w sposób bardzo teatralny, i nie sposób
oprzeć się wrażeniu, iż całość jest wynikiem czystej improwizacji. Obraz
kreowany przez Horhodox i Haiku Funeral ma wyłącznie ciemne barwy i ciężko
znaleźć w min jakiekolwiek pozytywne emocje. Panuje tu zaduch, strach i
cuchnąca pleśnią ciemność. I tak zupełnie szczerze, owe tło nie wyróżnia się
jakoś specjalnie na tle innych przedstawicieli gatunku. Rzecz w tym, że panowie
postanowili nałożyć na nie, i to w znacznej ilości, ślady saksofonu, który
pojawia się co chwile, całkowicie zaskakując swoimi partiami. Można wręcz
odnieść wrażenie, że ów saksofon zupełnie nie patrzy na pozostałe instrumenty,
lecz wygrywa swoje, czyniąc klimat albumu mocno schizofrenicznym. Kwestią
zasadniczą jest to, czy taki happening nas zaintryguje, czy też szybko znudzi.
Bo na pewno nie można po tym materiale oczekiwać jakichkolwiek „melodyjnych”
czy „chwytliwych” fragmentów. Ona wręcz odpycha słuchacza i odstrasza. Jeśli
zatem spodziewacie się muzyki ułożonej, logicznej i łatwej, to możecie obejść
to wydawnictwo szerokim łukiem. Jeśli lubicie wyzwania i nie straszna wam
muzyka dziwna i popierdolona, to serdecznie zapraszam do spotkania z
„Serpentine Sorcery”. Ale ostrzegam, łatwo nie będzie.

When artists
such as Horthodox and Haiku Funeral get behind a joint work, it becomes
immediately clear that the result will not be anything usual. Both artists have previously appeared on
Apocalyptic Rites, so even the moderately well-informed should know who's who.
‘Serpentine Sorcery is, not surprisingly, not material for everyone. It is
difficult and requires a bit of concentration, and certainly a lot of patience.
For what reason? Well, together the gentlemen have created an almost hour-long
album in the dark ambient / noise genre. At least that's how it can be labeled,
although on the other hand, it's not so obvious. Certainly, the basis of this
music is the dark drone backgrounds, which are dominated by synth pads,
samples, nature and beyond the world sounds and sparing vocal additions. As is
not hard to guess, the action of ‘Serpentine Sorcery’ moves very slowly. The
artists unfold their visions in a very theatrical manner, and one cannot help
feeling that the whole is the result of pure improvisation. The image created
by Horhodox and Haiku Funeral is exclusively dark and it is hard to find any
positive emotions in it. It is suffocating, frightening and stinking with
mouldy darkness. Quite frankly, this background doesn’t stand out from other
representatives of the genre. The thing is that the gentlemen decided to
overlay it with a considerable amount of saxophone traces, which appear every
now and then, completely surprising with their parts. One even gets the
impression that this saxophone does not look at the other instruments at all,
but wins its own, making the atmosphere of the album strongly schizophrenic.
The question is whether such a happening will intrigue or quickly bore us.
Because one certainly cannot expect any ‘melodic’ or ‘catchy’ passages from
this material. It actually repels the listener and puts him off. So if you are
expecting structured, logical and easy music, you can avoid this release by a
wide margin. If you like challenges and are not afraid of strange and fucked in
mind music, then I cordially invite you to meet ‘Serpentine Sorcery’. But be
warned, it won't be easy.
