Cztery lata temu włoski Thulsa Doom zarejestrował
materiał zatytułowany „Realms of Hatred”. Była to na tyle obiecująca pozycja,
że natychmiast umieściłem jej autorów w kajecie z dopiskiem „bacznie
obserwować”. Dziś, dzięki Invictus Productions mam przyjemność poznać kolejny
etap rozwoju jegomości ze stolicy kraju o kształcie buta. I faktycznie jest to
przyjemność niebywała, bowiem to, co Thulsa Doom dostarczają na „A Faith Worse
Than Death” to miód na moje uszy. Debiut Morbid Angel czczę nieprzerwanie od
chwili, kiedy to pierwszy raz się z nim
zapoznałem. Wczesny Nocturnus to też dla mnie kult. Biorąc pod uwagę, iż wpływy
tych właśnie kapel są dla autorów omawianej dziś płyty największymi
inspiracjami, oczywistym się staje mój zachwyt nad tym co słyszę. Te dziewięć
kompozycji to najwyższej klasy staro szkolny death metal. To prawdziwa podróż w
przeszłość pod każdym względem.
Brzmienie, jakie udało się Włochom uzyskać, to czysta końcówka lat
osiemdziesiątych. Czyli wszystko rośnie tu na organicznym podłożu, bez dodatków
komputera i zbytniej obróbki, a jednocześnie brzmi cholernie ciężko i masywnie.
Każdy instrument jest doskonale słyszalny i nic nie ginie w ścianie dźwięku.
Same utwory to mikstura starej szkoły Trey’a, bardzo wyraźnie słyszalnej w
sposobie riffowania oraz partiach solowych, z kilkoma innymi klasykami, jak
choćby wspomniany już Nocturnus (tu głównie mam na myśli barwę wokalu oraz
sposób artykulacji, a także niektóre partie perkusyjne), ale i Incantation czy
nawet Brutality. Ponadto Thulsa Doom potrafią nie raz zaskoczyć nieco bardziej
fińską melodią, jak choćby w „Tomb of the Serpent Cult”. Każda z kompozycji
porywa tak samo mocno jak klasyczne dziś kawałki sprzed circa trzydziestu lat,
każda ma w sobie moc, chwytliwość i ponadprzeciętny feeling. No posłuchajcie
sobie nawet instrumentalnego utworu tytułowego i powiedzcie, ile zespołów jest
dziś w stanie nagrać numer akustyczny tak głęboko przesiąknięty old skulem.
Zgoda, niektóre momenty są dość wyraźnie podobne do wspomnianych wcześniej
oryginałów, niektóre składowe brzmią nawet jak żywcem z nich wycięte. Jednak
sposób, w jaki makaroniarze poukładali klocki po swojemu to jest prawdziwy
majstersztyk. A bardzo oszczędne użycie klawiszy dodatkowo potęguje majestat i
tajemniczość tych nagrań. Pod względem słuchalności ten materiał nie zasługuje
nawet na najmniejsza krytykę. Tu wszystko się zgadza i mankamentów nie
uświadczycie. Chcecie by wyróżnić jakieś numery? Szkoda miejsca, bo play listę
każdy może sobie przeczytać sam. Ten album nie ma słabych punktów. To jest
właśnie taki śmierć metal jakiego mogę słuchać bez końca. I tyle mam do powiedzenia.

Four years ago,
Italy's Thulsa Doom recorded material entitled "Realms of Hatred." It
was such a promising item that I immediately put its authors in my notebook
with the note "watch closely". Today, thanks to Invictus Productions,
I have the pleasure of getting to know the next stage in the development of the
guys from the capital of the boot-shaped country. And indeed it is an
unparalleled pleasure, for what Thulsa Doom deliver on "A Faith Worse Than
Death" is music to my ears. I have worshipped Morbid Angel's debut
non-stop since I first became acquainted with it. Early Nocturnus is also a
cult for me. Considering that the influences of these very bands are the
greatest inspirations for the authors of the album under discussion today, my
admiration for what I hear becomes obvious. These nine compositions are
top-notch old school death metal. It's a true journey into the past in every
respect. The sound that the Italians
have managed to achieve is pure eighties end. That is to say, everything grows
here on an organic base, without the addition of a computer or too much
processing, while sounding damn heavy and massive. Every instrument is
perfectly audible and nothing is lost in the wall of sound. The songs
themselves are a concoction of Trey's old school, very clearly audible in the way
of riffing and solo parts, with some other classics, such as the aforementioned
Nocturnus (here I'm mainly referring to the vocal timbre and the way of
articulation, as well as some of the drum parts), but also Incantation or even
Brutality. In addition, Thulsa Doom are able to surprise more than once with a
slightly more Finnish melody, such as in "Tomb of the Serpent Cult."
Each of the compositions thrills as much as today's classic pieces from circa
thirty years ago, each has power, catchiness and an above-average feeling.
Well, listen to the instrumental title track and tell me how many bands today
are capable of recording an acoustic song so deeply steeped in old skull. I
agree, some moments are quite clearly similar to the aforementioned originals,
some of the components even sound like they were cut alive from them. However,
the way the Spaghettis have arranged the blocks in their own way is a real
masterpiece. And the very sparing use of keyboards further enhances the majesty
and mystery of these recordings. In terms of listenability, this material does
not deserve even the slightest criticism. Everything is right here and you
won't experience any shortcomings. Would you like some tracks to be singled
out? Waste of space, because everyone can read the play list for themselves.
This album has no weak points. This is the kind of mortem metal I can listen to
endlessly. And that's all I have to say.
