Coagulate
"Rehearsal
Demo 2022"
Gurgling Gore / Dawnbreed Rec. 2023
Coagulate is a
young band from Minneapolis, active for only a few years and still at the stage
of demo materials. The above name, rightly so, may seem completely unknown to
you. Well, there will be an opportunity to get acquainted with the work of the
Americans, as a vinyl version of their latest demo so far, with the simple title
"Rehearsal Demo 2022", has just been released. And it's worth getting
familiar with, as it's really twelve minutes of more than decent death metal.
Let me start perhaps with the sound, since at least some of you, seeing
"rehearsal" in the title, are probably wondering if it's listenable.
Well, today's listener, raised on digital, probably wouldn't get through many
of the garage recordings that used to be the daily bread back in the days.
However, let me reassure you. If these songs were actually recorded in one go,
and were not then subjected to a hundred additions, then shapo baux. It sounds
like a studio recording, the sound is fat and all the instruments are perfectly
audible. In particular, the bass breaks through wonderfully at times, pluming
forward like the master DiGiorgio’s. The two compositions on this release,
although both linked by a death metal bracket, are a look at the genre as if
from two sides. And this is true in every respect. Take a look at the titles. "Divination
in Gore (The Tender Caress of Necromancy; the Volatile Art of Cadaver
Inquisition)" versus "The Suck." Slight dissonance, isn’t it?
The former is a fairly straightforward take on the subject. You won't find
finesse chords here, but a rather clunky blowing in the American death/gore
style. The tempo is medium, the vocals are very deep, and only the solo
slightly stands out above the whole in terms of technicality. On the other
hand, the first surprise comes right at the end of the song, when weepy
declamations appear, sending little shivers down your spine. The second
composition, a bit faster, is already full of ear-catching fragments. There are
more catchy riffs, tempo changes and other twists, again declamatory
lyricism... It gets really interesting. And when suddenly silence falls, you
want to cry "Fuck, already?!". When the tension was steadily rising,
suddenly someone turned off the electricity? Really, I feel like after a
delicious appetizer, the waiter unexpectedly asked me out of the restaurant.
Coagulate has given me a huge taste, and from now on I will be impatiently
looking out for their next material, because I am very curious to see how the
guys will develop their style. They have a lot of potential, so expectations
will be set correspondingly high as well. For today, however, I must suffice
with "Rehearsal Demo 2022", the checking of which, if you call
yourself a death metal maniac, is your homework. A mandatory one.
