zespołu, widoczna powyżej, może być na
dobrą sprawę tłumaczona dwojako. Sam Sobie Cierp, lub Cierpienie Z Powodu Mnie
Samego. Zastanawiałem się, które z owych znaczeń zespół miał na myśli
dobierając banner do swojej muzyki…

Bym powiedział, że to drugie jest prawidłowe. Taki synonim „Self-suffering”,
czyli samocierpienia.
Czy
zespół uważa zatem, że walka ze sobą, znoszenie własnych słabości jest
najgorszym aspektem naszej egzystencji?
-
Dobre pytanie. Powiedzielibyśmy, że nihilizm jest najlepszy. Bo cierpienie
człowieka wypływa ze środka.
Idąc
zatem tropem myśli przyświecającej muzykom na samym początku, mam prawo
domniemywać, że całkowicie zgadzają się z aktem samobójstwa, jako pewnego
rodzaju rozwiązania własnych niedoskonałości?

Absolutnie. Jest to ultymatywne rozwiązanie. Im inteligentniejszy jest człowiek
– tym więcej cierpi. Przez „osie”, przedstawione na naszej nowej płycie jako
utwory, pokazujemy cierpienie przez różne aspektu natury człowieka – intelekt,
słabe ciało etc.
„Axis
of Tortures” to czwarty pełnograj tego, obecnie ukraińsko – szwedzkiego
ansamblu, których to poprzedni album miałem przyjemność przedstawić wam z dwa
lata temu. Zespół ten jest pewnego rodzaju zaprzeczeniem, środkowym palcem
wystawionym w kierunku ogólnie panujących zasad. Dlaczego? Bowiem ich muzyka z
każdym kolejnym wydawnictwem nie kieruje się w stronę mainstreamu czy
popularności. Ona od nich ucieka. Każdy kolejny album Suffer Yourself jest trudniejszy
w odbiorze, bardziej wymagający i pozbawiony elementów szybkoprzyswajalnych.
Tak jak często stoję w opozycji do
„rozwoju”, często niestety źle rozumianego, tak w tym przypadku mogę z
czystym sumieniem stwierdzić, iż postępuje on w jedynym słusznym kierunku. Nowe
dziecko Suffer Yourself to zdecydowanie najbardziej dołujący i mroczny materiał
jaki chłopakom (i pani) udało się zarejestrować. Jednocześnie najbardziej
dojrzały i przemyślany. Jest to w końcu dokładnie taki funeral doom metal, jaki
miałem nadzieję od nich usłyszeć. „Axis of Tortures” to intro i outro (oba
będące chaotyczną mieszanką fragmentów albumu) oraz cztery dość długie
kompozycje, nazwane koncepcyjnie osiami.
Całość trwa godzinę i cechuję się czymś, co skłania mnie do wsiąkania w te
dźwięki całym sobą. Tym czymś jest niebywale dojrzała umiejętność budowania
klimatu i wyłamywania się schematom. Nie ma tu, jak w większości przypadków
płyt rzeczonego gatunku, męczenia buły i dryfowania przez pół godziny na jednym
– dwóch riffach. W kompozycjach Suffer Yourself dzieje się wiele, i wiele
elementów zaskakuje. Przez większość czasu muzyka na tym albumie toczy się w
bardzo niespiesznym tempie a przebudzenia kamiennego kolosa są bardzo nieliczne
i krótkie. Nie dziwnym jest zatem, iż słuchając „Axis of Tortures” można poczuć
przygnębienie i niemal fizyczny ciężar na karku. Żadną nowością nie są tutaj
wplatane elementy bardziej melancholijne, jednak podkreślić trzeba jedną,
kluczową rzecz, będącą, przynajmniej dla mnie, niezwykle istotną. Na tej płycie
nie ma smucenia, a tym bardziej żadnych słodkości. Tutaj wszystko pogrążone
jest w autentycznej zadumie. Stąd też porównanie muzycznego oblicza Suffer
Yourself do Esoteric wydają mi się jak najbardziej na miejscu, choć nie będę
ukrywał, iż do geniuszu Brytoli kapkę im jeszcze brakuje. Tym bardziej, że
ilość nakładanych efektów też jest w tym przypadku zdecydowanie mniejsza, co
nie znaczy, że ozdobników tu brak. Nie będę jednak rozkładał wszystkiego na
czynniki pierwsze, tym bardziej, że płyta to całość, a nie porozrzucane po
podłodze klocki. Podsumowując zatem… Suffer Yourself nagrał bezapelacyjnie
najlepszy materiał w swoim dorobku, mocno pukający do ścisłej czołówki tego
typu grania. Po raz kolejny wykonał krok wprzód, przede wszystkim udoskonalając
swoje własne „ja”, a nie bazując jedynie na kopiowaniu klasycznych wzorców. Dla
mnie ten materiał to bezapelacyjnie jeden z najlepszych albumów gatunku, jaki
było mi dane w tym roku usłyszeć.

"Axis of Tortures"
The band's name, seen above, can be translated in two
ways for good measure. Suffer Yourself (meaning: I’m not going to), or Suffer
Because of Being Yourself”. I wonder which of these meanings the band had in
mind when selecting the banner for their music....
- I would say that the latter is correct. Such a
synonym for "Self-suffering".
So does the band think that fighting with oneself,
enduring one's own weaknesses is the worst aspect of our existence?
- Good question. We would say that nihilism is the
best. Because man's suffering flows from within.
So, following the thought behind the musicians at the
very beginning, I have the right to assume that they completely agree with the
act of suicide as a kind of solution to their own inadequacies?
- Absolutely. It is the ultimative solution. The more
intelligent a person is - the more they suffer. Through the "axes",
presented on our new album as songs, we show suffering through different
aspects of man's nature - intellect, weak body, etc.
"Axis of Tortures" is the fourth full-length
of this, now Ukrainian-Swedish band, whose previous album I had the pleasure to
introduce to you like two years ago. This band is a contradiction of sorts, a
middle finger extended in the direction of the generally prevailing rules. Why?
Because their music, with each successive release, is not heading towards the
mainstream or popularity. It runs away from them. Each next Suffer Yourself
album is harder to listen to, more challenging and devoid of easily digestible
elements. As much as I often stand in opposition to "development,"
often misunderstood, in this case I can say with a clear conscience that it is
progressing in the only right direction. Suffer Yourself's new baby is by far
the most depressing and dark material the guys (and the lady) have managed to
record. At the same time, it is the most mature and thoughtful. It is, in the
end, exactly the kind of funeral doom metal I was hoping to hear from them.
"Axis of Tortures" features an intro and outro (both of which are a
chaotic mix of album fragments) and four rather long compositions, conceptually
named “axes”. The lot lasts an hour and is characterized by something that
makes me soak in the sounds with my whole self. That something is an incredibly
mature ability to build atmosphere and break out of patterns. There is no, as
in most cases of albums of the genre in question, agonizing gushing and
drifting for half an hour on one - two riffs. There is a lot going on in Suffer
Yourself's compositions, and many elements are surprising. Most of the time the
music on this album moves at a very unhurried pace and the awakenings of the
stone colossus are very few and brief. It is not surprising, therefore, that
listening to "Axis of Tortures" one can feel a sense of gloom and an
almost physical weight on one's neck. No novelty here is the inclusion of more
melancholic elements, but one crucial thing must be emphasized, being, at least
for me, extremely important. There is no sadness on this album, much less any
sweetness. Here everything is plunged into genuine reverie. Hence, comparisons
of the musical face of Suffer Yourself to Esoteric seem to me most appropriate,
although I won't hide the fact that they still lack a little to the genius of
the Brits. The more so because the amount of used effects in this case is also
decidedly fewer, which doesn’t mean that the ornaments here are lacking. However,
I will not dissect everything, especially since an album is a whole, not blocks
scattered on the floor. So, to sum it up... Suffer Yourself have recorded
unquestionably the best material in their career, firmly knocking to the premier
league of this music genre. They have once again taken a step forward,
primarily refining their own self, rather than relying solely on copying
classic patterns. For me, this material is unquestionably one of the best
albums of the genre I have heard this year.
