A review of Dungeon "Into the Ruins"

"Into the Ruins"

Dying Victims 2023

Dungeon is a band that will celebrate its tenth anniversary next year. However, the gentlemen are probably not among the busiest. So far they have only managed to record two demo tapes and an EP. Not counting doubled tracks, there would be, zusammen, less than forty minutes of music. That is, about three minutes per year. There is a stereotype that the Brits are phlegmatic, and in this case it seems to be confirmed. But enough of the pinching, because in a month's time, by Dying Victims, the guys will return with EP number two, entitled as seen above. It contains five new songs, which are, as the German label has already accustomed us to, a return to the past. "Into the Ruins" is old-school, deeply rooted in 1980s speed / thrash metal, drawing fully from the classics of the genre. The issue, therefore, is simple. If someone likes Venom, Razor or Onslaught, and is not a senile grandpa who doesn't touch novelties and reaches only for the originals, this material will welcome as readily as Angela White two black cocks. And he will have just as much fun with these sounds. Dungeon may be slow on the uptake, but their compositions perfectly capture the spirit of times gone by. In fact, everything is right here. We hear razor-sharp riffs, aggressive solo parts and rough vocals. The whole thing in a somewhat spontaneous atmosphere, with the wildness typical of the fathers of the genre. At the same time with a good dose of catchiness. Personally, I really like the sound of the drums on this album, deep and heavily rumbling. It's clear that the musicians feel what they're playing, and they haven't been holding instruments in their hands since yesterday. For the inquisitive, who will ask if there is something of their own in this music after all... There is. Evidently flowing from this music a wide stream of sincerity. Because I'm not going to lie to anyone that in terms of music there is something on "Into the Ruins" that you hadn't heard before. But I'm sure that when Dungeon recorded these songs they did it with great enthusiasm and satisfaction, because you can feel it. And for me, that's enough to put this kind of tribute to good old times on my shelf.
