FIRMAMENT
"We Don't Rise, We Just Fall"
Dying Victims Productions 2023
Firmament is a relatively young band from Leipzig. They
were formed in 2021, so they've been acting tohether for not long, but their
music takes the listener back in time more than four decades. So the gentlemen play,
as most of you may have already guessed, classic, quite feisty Hard & Heavy
almost vividly cut from the late 70s and early 80s. One can hear in their music
the inspirations of early Iron Maiden and Angel Witch, but equally we can hear
in it patents characteristic of the work of Scorpions, ThinLizzy, or Rush. The
band on their first full-length album has successfully combined the rawness of
rootsy British Heavy Metal with the brawny, woozy catchiness and energetic
grind of traditional, even canonical, European Hard Rock. There really are a
lot of good, diverse bass lines, strong drum accents, solid riffs, dreamy
guitar harmonies and firm vocals. Undoubtedly, it all has its own atmosphere,
there are a few twists and turns, and melodies that can be hummed are also not
lacking on this production. "We Don't Rise..." as a whole, however,
did not knock me out. It’s little too monotonous and at the same time
nonchalant record, and I have a feeling, that even in the 80s, it would not
have made a great frenzy (although making such a thesis, I may, of course, be
wrong). However, the material is so decent, reliable and sincere in its message
that I can easily recommend it to all maniacs of classical structures and
traditional sounds. The others, on the other hand, without any shame, can safely
let go of this album.
