VENATOR
"Echoes from the Gutter"
Dying Victims Productions 2022
When it comes to the first full-length album by
Austrian quintet Venator, things are as simple as it can get. Therefore, it
will be short and succinct. For the keyword for this material is Heavy Metal.
And all is fucking clear! So anyone whose nipples harden at the sound of the
words classic Metal simply has to get this material, because there is no chance
they won’t like it. The Austrians fervently revere the traditional music of the
1980s and draw inspiration from both the NWOBHM and the American school in handfuls.
Not surprisingly, there's a feeling and vibe over this album that is familiar
to the work of Iron Maiden, Omen, Jag Panzer, Judas Priest, Satan, or Angel
Witch. There may not be any great fireworks here, but it's really a very good
album that presents the authentic sounds of Heavy Metal's heyday. "Echoes
from the Gutter" is even a celebration of those times. Everything here is
lively, feisty, full of vigor, but at the same time natural and sincere. Drums
gallop merrily driven by expressive lines of hard, sonorous bass. Stylish riffs
and almost canonical solos cut catchy melodic patterns, at which it's hard not
to swipe your mane and go dancing with a nod. The whole thing is held by the
snout by excellent vocal parts, which at the same time assimilate perfectly
with the instrumental content of this album. This album is extremely energetic,
hooky, meaty as hell and you want to listen to it again and again, which is
undoubtedly its great strength. After all, how can one not come back to such songs
as "Red and Black", "Seventh Seal", "Howlat the
Rain", "Manic Man", or "Nightrider". It is thanks to
albums like Venator's debut that the flames of classic Heavy Metal shine with
an immortal glow all the time. A truly exquisite one that should, or rather
needs to be on the shelf of every Heavy Metal maniac.
