Cholera! Byłem przekonany, że Blessed Offal już
dawno poszedł do piachu. Ostatni raz jakiekolwiek znak życia dali bowiem niemal
dziesięć lat temu, wydając split z Innumerable Forms dla Hell Massacre Records.
Aż tu nagle, zupełnie przypadkowo, trafiłem na informację, że zespół nie dość
że wciąż funkcjonuje, to na początku roku wydał nawet debiutancki album. Nic
jednak dziwnego w tym, że ten fakt mnie ominął, skoro taśmę, na dodatek w ścisłym
limicie stu sztuk, wypuściła kompletnie mi nieznana, bo dopiero startująca Cynical Impulse. Mniejsza jednak z tym. Taśmę zdobyłem i oto mogę w
pełni delektować się dźwiękami zawartymi na „Machinations of a Doomed Planet”.
A jest się faktycznie czym zachwycać. Blessed Offal zawsze miał swój własny
styl, mimo iż zakorzeniony głęboko w klasyce death metalu, to jednak z tym
charakterystycznym dla siebie sznytem. Materiał o którym mowa to cztery
trwające circa czterdzieści minut kompozycje, zarejestrowane jeszcze na
przełomie 2015/16 roku. Cztery smoliste kolosy, cztery deathmetalowe buldożery,
czterej jeźdźcy Apokalipsy. Co tu się dzieje, to jest prawdziwy majstersztyk. Zacznijmy
od tego, że Amerykanie w genialny sposób potrafią budować niebywale duszną
atmosferę i klimat zła. Doskonale wiedzą w którym miejscu przyspieszyć a gdzie
mocno wyhamować, by do ich, dość długich przecież, kompozycji nie wkradała się
monotonia. Tutaj co chwilę tasują się kruszące swoją potęgą i majestatem
akordy, płynnie wypływające z siebie harmonie mieszają w głowie i powodują, że
wokół zaczyna jakby brakować powietrza. Atmosferę mistycyzmu potęgują nałożone
na gitary efekty, chwilami przypominające odrobinę styl Disembowelment, gdzie indziej
do złudzenie przypominające nawet instrumenty smyczkowe. Posłuchajcie
„Preemptive Anthropomancy” a przyznacie mi rację. Ponadto sposób, w jaki
złowieszcza aura wisząca nad naszą głową przy spotkaniu z „Machinations of a
Doomed Planet” się zmienia, przypomina ekstremalne anomalia pogodowe.
Znajdujemy się w oku cyklonu, intensywnie bombardowani blastującymi beczkami i
intensywnym riffowaniem, by po chwili wszystko, poza czarnymi chmurami, odeszło
w niepamięć, pozostawiając po sobie złowieszczą ciszę, nie wróżącą jednak
absolutnie nic dobrego. Nadmienić też trzeba, iż linie wokalne to absolutny top
gatunku. Barwa i głębia jaką operuje RAS może autentycznie wywoływać ciarki na
plecach. Jeśli jeszcze dodamy, że pod względem brzmienia jest to najbardziej dopracowany,
najcięższy materiał zespołu, bezwzględnie organiczny a zarazem stuprocentowo
selektywny, to już chyba nikt nie będzie zadawał zbędnych pytań. Bez wątpienia
ten krążek ma w sobie wiele elementów, których nie da się wychwycić jedynie po
kilku odsłuchach. Sam odbyłem z nim kilka sesji i za każdym razem
wychwytuję coś nowego, coś co wcześniej przeoczyłem. Może zbyt wcześnie na
takie opinie, ale coś czuję, że ten album może znaleźć się w moim prywatnym
rankingu w bardzo ścisłym topie tego roku. Dlatego, że słuchając tych nagrań
czuję się chwilami bezbronny niczym dziecko. Czuję się marionetką w rękach
Blessed Offal i wcale nie odczuwam z tego powodu dyskomfortu. Podsumuję moje
wywody zatem bardzo krótko. Sprawcie sobie tą kasetkę za wszelką cenę, bo jej
zawartość niejednemu może przewartościować system. Dla mnie jest to rzecz
genialna.

Damn! I was
convinced that Blessed Offal has been pushing up the daisies for long. After
all, the last time they gave any sign of life was almost a decade ago,
releasing a split with Innumerable Forms for Hell Massacre Records. And then
suddenly, quite by accident, I came across information that the band is not
only still functioning, but earlier this year even released a debut album.
However, there's nothing surprising that the fact passed me by, since the tape,
in the strict limit of one hundred copies, was released by Cynical Impulse, a completely unknown to me label. But
nevermind. I did get the tape and here I can fully enjoy the sounds contained
on "Machinations of a Doomed Planet". And there is indeed much to
delight in. Blessed Offal has always had its own style, although rooted deep in
death metal classics, but with that distinctive twist. The material in question
is four compositions lasting circa forty minutes, recorded back in late
2015/16. Four tarry colossi, four deathmetal bulldozers, four horsemen of the
Apocalypse. What's going on here is a real masterpiece. Let's start with the
fact that the Americans brilliantly know how to build an incredibly suffocating
atmosphere and climate of evil. They know perfectly where to speed up and where
to slow down hard, so that monotony does not creep into their, after all,
rather long compositions. Here, every now and then chords shuffle, crushing
with their power and majesty, smoothly flowing harmonies stir in your head and
make you seem to run out of air around you. The atmosphere of mysticism is
heightened by the effects superimposed on the guitars, at times reminiscent a
bit of Disembowelment style, elsewhere even deceptively reminiscent of string
instruments. Listen to "Preemptive Anthropomancy" and you'll admit
I'm right. Moreover, the way the ominous aura hanging over our heads upon
encountering "Machinations of a Doomed Planet" changes is reminiscent
of extreme weather anomalies. We find ourselves in the eye of the cyclone,
intensely bombarded with blasting drums and intense riffing, so that after a
while everything, except for the black clouds, is gone, leaving behind an
ominous silence, which, however, augurs absolutely nothing good. It should also
be mentioned that the vocal lines are the absolute top of the genre. The timbre
and depth that RAS operates can genuinely send shivers down your spine. If we
also add that in terms of sound this is the most polished, heaviest material of
the band, absolutely organic and at the same time 100% selective, no one will
probably ask unnecessary questions. Undoubtedly, this album has many elements
in it that cannot be grasped after only a few listens. I myself have had
several sessions with it, and each time I catch something new, something I had
previously overlooked. Maybe it's too early to make such an opinion, but I feel
something that this album may be in my personal ranking in a very close top of
this year. That's because listening to these recordings I feel at times as
vulnerable as a child. I feel like a puppet in the hands of Blessed Offal, and
I don't feel uncomfortable about it at all. So I will summarize my argument
very briefly. Get your hands on this cassette at all costs, because its
contents may reevaluate the system for many. For me it is a brilliant thing.
