Dwa lata zajęło młodym Szwedom nagranie następcy
wyjątkowo udanego debiutu. Nie będę ukrywał, że na ten materiał czekałem bardzo
niecierpliwie, licząc na kolejną dawkę konkretnego death / thrashu z północy.
Mając bowiem na uwadze wiek chłopaków wchodzących w skład zespołu, można było
liczyć, iż wewnętrzny bunt nie wygaśnie w nich jeszcze przez wiele lat. A że są
utalentowani, to już udowodnili. Otwierający „Alkahest” utwór „Ascend” nie
zwiastuje większych zmian stylistycznych i jest w prostej linii kontynuacją
tego, co mogliśmy usłyszeć na „Sarcator”. Jednak już kolejny „Perdition’s Hand”
mocno zaskakuje bardzo klasycznym, heavymetalowym feelingiem i wpadającą w ucho
melodią. To, co się dzieje później, to kompletny odjazd, którego się za chuj
nie spodziewałem. Kwartet z Trollhättan ewidentnie wyszedł z pudełka w
zaskakujący sposób wplatając w swoją twórczość nie tylko wpływy oczywiste, ale
też żeniąc swój death / thrash metal z heavy metalem, black metalem ale także
elementami psychodelicznego rocka. Oczywiście nadal sporo na tym krążku
masywnych, ciężkich riffów i fragmentów do pomachania łbem. Zostały jednak one
tym razem bogato urozmaicone przez akustyczne fragmenty w oparach opium (choćby
odjazdy w „Dreameater”), nastrojowe pasaże czy nawet wstawki w stylu quasi
country. Z drugiej strony można natknąć się tu także na elementy wyjątkowo
proste, niemal punkowe. Naprawdę sporo w tej muzyce drobnych niuansów i
dodatków, jak choćby fragmenty śpiewane z transylwańskim akcentem czy krótki,
jedynie z lekka zaakcentowany klawiszowy motyw albo pojawiający się znienacka
nieokreślony dźwięk, niby niepozornych a jakże urozmaicających twórczość
Szwedów. Wokalnie też nie mamy już jedynie szorstkiego śpiewu, choć ten nadal
zdecydowanie przeważa, ale gdzieniegdzie pojawiły się też podkreślające
atmosferę muzyki szepty. Przyznam, że zwłaszcza w środkowej części „Alkahest”
aranże dość mocno kojarzą mi się z niektórymi nagraniami Tribulation, z tą
olbrzymią różnicą, że Sarcator, w przeciwieństwie do swoich rodaków, nie
przekroczyli tej cienkiej linii za którą więcej jest śmiechu i falbanek niż
prawdziwego metalu. Natomiast sposób wplatania w swoje kompozycję
rock’and’rollowego ducha może też przywoływać w pamięci fiński The Black
League. A jeszcze żeby nie było za mało, zwłaszcza pod koniec płyty bardzo
mocno uwypuklają się inspiracje płynące z Metallica z okresu „Master of
Puppets” / …And Justice For All”. Na „Alkahest” tyle się dzieje, że nie wiem
nawet ile razy moja szczęka huknęła o podłogę, a faktu, iż całość trwa niemal
godzinę kompletnie nie zauważyłem. A co najważniejsze, wszystkie elementy
doskonale się zazębiają, uzupełniają i tworzą bardzo spójny i logiczny obraz. Chłopaki
jednak totalnie nam odpłynęli. Sarcofago? Kreator? Zapomnijcie. Ci kolesie nie
poszli po najmniejszej linii oporu i sporo pokombinowali. To już zupełnie inny
wymiar. Jest w nim co eksplorować, jest się czym zachwycać. I mam jedynie
nadzieję, że na „trójce” Sarcator nie odjadą w żaboty i damskie fatałaszki, bo
obecne oblicze zespołu bardzo mi się podoba.

It took two
years for the young Swedes to record a follow-up to their exceptionally
successful debut. I won't hide the fact that I was waiting for this material
very impatiently, hoping for another dose of concrete death / thrash from the
north. After all, given the age of the guys who make up the band, one could
count on the fact that the inner rebellion in them would not expire for many more
years. And that they are talented, they have already proven. The opening track
"Alkahest" "Ascend" doesn't herald any major stylistic
changes and is a straightforward continuation of what we could hear on
"Sarcator." However, the very next "Perdition's Hand"
strongly surprises with a very classic heavy metal feeling and a catchy melody.
What happens next is a complete buzz that I didn't expect for the heck of it.
The quartet from Trollhättan has clearly stepped out of the box in a surprising
way, weaving not only obvious influences into their work, but also marrying
their death / thrash metal with heavy metal, black metal but also elements of
psychedelic rock. Of course, there are still a lot of massive, heavy riffs and
headbanging passages on this album. However, this time they have been richly
varied by acoustic fragments in an opium vapor (such as the buzz in
"Dreameater"), atmospheric passages or even inserts in a
quasi-country style. On the other hand, one can also come across extremely
simple, almost punkish elements here. There are really a lot of little nuances
and additions in this music, such as fragments sung with a Transylvanian accent
or a short, only slightly accented keyboard motif or an unspecified sound
appearing suddenly, seemingly inconspicuous but adding variety to the Swedes'
work. Vocally, we no longer have only rough singing, although this still
definitely prevails, but there are also whispers that emphasize the atmosphere
of the music. I'll admit that, especially in the middle part of
"Alkahest", the arrangements remind me quite strongly of some
Tribulation recordings, with the huge difference that Sarcator, unlike their
compatriots, did not cross that thin line behind which there are more laughs
and frills than real metal. On the other hand, the way they weave a
rock'and'roll spirit into their compositions may also bring to mind Finland's
The Black League finest. And yet, not to be outdone, especially towards the end
of the album, the inspirations flowing from Metallica from the "Master of
Puppets" / ...And Justice For All" period are very strongly
emphasized. There is so much going on on "Alkahest" that I don't even
know how many times my jaw banged against the floor, and the fact that the
whole thing lasts almost an hour I completely missed. And most importantly, all
the elements perfectly interlock, complement each other and create a very
coherent and logical picture. The guys, however, totally drifted away.
Sarcofago? Kreator? Forget it. These guys did not follow the lowest line of
resistance and messed around a lot. This is already a completely different
dimension. There is something to explore in it, there is something to marvel
at. And I only hope that on the third album Sarcator will not depart into
jabots and women's fatigues, because I like the current face of the band very
much.
