Atonement
"Sadistic Invaders"
Dying Victims 2023
Swedish Atonement with their demo, released almost exactly
two years ago, made it clear to have their name in mind. However, how many
times have there been cases where, after an excellent start, a band suddenly
lost that inner fire somewhere and recorded a debut that was as disappointing
as the demo recordings were surprising. In this particular case, however, I was
exceptionally calm, because "Sadistic Invaders" was signed with the
Dying Victims logo, and this particular label is, as those versed in the subject
will probably confirm, a kind of guarantee of quality. The Swedes' new material
is in a straight line a continuation of what we could hear on "Merciless
Blasphemy". The youngsters do not try to introduce revealing or surprising
elements into their music. No. Their compositions are painfully predictable and
played somewhat from an old, well-known template. Well, but when playing
old-school thrash metal, laced with a bit of black soup, is any deviation from
the canon possible? I don't think so. So, on "Sadistic Invaders" we
have the pleasure of dealing with primal, somewhat primitive evil, expressed
through razor-sharp riffs, most often played at full speed. Often recalling
classics of the genre, mainly those from the German lands. The individual
songs, as I mentioned, are not very diverse. In each you'll find a catchy motif
to bang your head at, a nice solo and a not too ambitious tapping of the drums.
Plus the standard aggressive vocals, without any quirks or unnecessary
experimentation. There are no ballads on this album, no instrumental
interludes. From start to finish, we are treated to thrash metal, just like the
old days. And it's thrash metal at a really high level, without a grain of
posturing or compromise. I don't see the point of dissecting everything here,
because what I've written will be a sufficient recommendation for those to whom
Atonement's debut should reach anyway. This does not mean, however, that this
album is intended only for old geezers for whom metal ended thirty years ago.
However, musical intellectuals and philosophers can safely let go of these
recordings. They won't understand a thing of it anyway.
