Umus

„Voidlit”

Ksenza Rec/ Aesthetic Death 2026

O Umus w sumie wiadomo niewiele. „Voidlit” to pięć długich funeral doomowych walców. Zresztą, nawet gdyby chcieli, to… wielu próbowało. To klasyka. Sprawdzajcie koniecznie!

Umus

“Voidlit”

Ksenza Rec/ Aesthetic Death 2026

Not much is actually known about Umus. It’s a new entity on the metal scene, but even the label provides only sparse information about it. However, considering that Ksenza Records is a label from Siberia, I’d guess that this musical project, at least in part, hails from beyond our eastern border. But enough with the speculation. Let’s focus on the music. Here, there’s no room for guesswork. “Voidlit” consists of five long funeral doom tracks. However, this isn’t just another run-of-the-mill funeral doom album. First and foremost, and this is what immediately set off a red flag for me, Umus approaches their music somewhat in the vein of Esoteric. And let me make this clear right away so no one complains later that I misled them: this doesn’t in the slightest mean that the guys are copying or trying to imitate the Brits. Besides, even if they wanted to… you know, many have tried. What I mean is that, unlike the average funeral doom band, Umus doesn’t endlessly rehash a single motif. They don’t loop harmonies or drag them out just for the sake of it. Their compositions are constant evolution, pushing forward. The musicians offer us something different every so often, interweaving atmospheric, and at times even acoustic moments, with eruptions of heaviness. Of course, there are powerful chords here, usually played at a very unhurried pace. There’s also a sleepyhead drummer, who hits his instrument as if he’s just woken up. It’s a classic. Beyond the obvious elements, there are also very skillfully applied effects, melodies weaving through the background, additional instruments appearing out of nowhere, and haunting guitar lines. And this is precisely where the associations with Esoteric are most apt. Moreover, the vocals. Incredibly deep, with a slight effect layered over them, resonating just as powerfully as the music itself, and, like the music, evolving throughout the tracks, changing in timbre or even style of expression, from growls to singing. It all unfolds somewhat like waves rolling in one after another, first stormy ones, that destroy everything in their path, followed by calmer ones that offer a moment for focus, reflection, and introspection. At the same time, I’m far from using the adjective “schematic” here, because the band very skillfully breaks free from typical formulas, crafting stories in their own unique way. They don’t rigidly adhere to genre standards, and even if they do, they definitely expand them. On the other hand, you won’t find any avant-garde elements on this album. Instead, you’ll find a colossus, whose face is visible on the cover, contained within sixty minutes of sounds. In my opinion, the picture reflects the content of “Voidlit” exceptionally well. Finally, I’ll add one more thought, once again comparing this trio’s music to Esoteric. With every listen, this music sinks deeper and deeper into you, becoming more and more addictive and captivating. I think this is one of Aesthetic Death’s best releases in quite a few years, even, or perhaps especially, considering that the label’s style really speaks to me. Be sure to check it out!
