A review of Moremyrk "MMXXII Demos"

"MMXXII Demos"

Dawnbreed Rec. 2023

Today we take a trip to Indonesia, because that's where Moremyrk comes from. The band, in two thousand and twenty, released, by the closer to me unknown Grieve Records Jakarta, a demo simply titled "MMXXII". As this tape sold out rather quickly, the European reissue of the said demo was handled by the Dutch Dawnbreed Records. As befits a demo, the material is not very long, as it closes in eighteen minutes. However, this much is usually enough to know whether the further fate of the band is worth following or can be poured over with a warm urine. In the case of Moremyrk, even if urine drips down our legs, it's more out of excitement. The three tracks included on "MMXXII Demos" are old-school death metal for those who like simplicity. Above all, there is nothing pleasant about these sounds, no signs of flirtation with other musical genres, no catchy melody straight out of a country disco, no keys or extracurricular instrumentation. Instead, there are coarse chords, which can be associated mainly with the ruthlessly genre-defying metal of death, from early Death, up to more swampy and graveyard revues you may know from, for example, the contemporary work of Eternal Rot. Speed ups here are few. The harmonies flow mostly to the rhythm of a pulse of a death welcoming, beginning to rot alive a wretch. Moremyrk create in a simple but not clichéd way, and not repetitive. Each of their compositions is slightly different from the others, and in addition to chords looped in a sludge manner, we are often treated to some trifle, such as a completely surprising tremolo in the background or a sudden, not necessarily obvious change of tempo. This, however, does not throw the listener off the omnipresent stench of decay, made worse by illegible, reverb-laden vocals, sounding like a slime-choked drowning man. The sound of these recordings is a real composter, with a natural odor of decay. Well, I wouldn't even imagine it a different way. If I add that Dawnbreed Records once again took exceptional care of the aesthetic qualities of the tape they released, I can't help but sincerely recommend its acquisition. Because it's a simple thing, but gives fun as fuck!
