No i oto mamy kolejnego potwora, pożeracza umysłów,
ze stajni Aesthetic Death. Już niedługo nakładem wspomnianej wytwórni pojawi
się dwupłytowy debiut Rot Coven. Pierwszy rozdział, „Phase I”, ujrzał światło
dzienne w formie cyfrowej wiosną dwa tysiące dwudziestego roku. Dopiero teraz
jednak otrzymamy te nagrania w formie fizycznej. „Phase II” to z kolei materiał
nowy. Razem czyni to półtorej godziny muzyki… a może raczej podróży do innego
wymiaru. Czym jest „Nightmares Devour the Waking World”? Zamiast silić się na
rozbijanie tych nagrań na czynniki pierwsze, powiem krótko. To pewnego rodzaju
czarna dziura, która, przy założeniu, że zbliżymy się do niej odpowiednio
blisko, wessie nas bezgranicznie i
zawładnie nami całkowicie. Wyobraźcie sobie miksturę tego, co najlepsze we
wczesnym Swans, Lustmord, MZ 412, Godflesh, Melvins, Haiku Funeral czy nawet
Yeruselem. Że używam klasycznych, kultowych nazw na wyrost? Nic bardziej
błędnego. Muzyka Rot Coven ma w sobie niesamowity ciężar, budowany za pomocą
syntezatorów, sampli i mrocznych dźwięków nieznanego pochodzenia, ma rytualny
klimat, często dyktowany w marszowym rytmie bębnów lub elektronicznych
beatów, ma klimat grozy oraz
ponadprzeciętny, narkotyczny trans. Akcja na tym albumie toczy się zazwyczaj w
powolnym, drone’owym tempie, budując mozolnie apokaliptyczny klimat i
utrzymując poziom napięcia na niezmiennie wysokim poziomie. Owo napięcie
chwilami jest tak wszechogarniające, że ma się ochotę dosłownie wyjść z ciała,
by dać sobie odrobinę ulgi. Bardzo oszczędnie dawkowane są na tym albumie
wokale, jedynie chwilami pojawiające się, jakby zza kotary, w formie
przesterowanych krzyków, growli czy deklamacji. „Nightmares Devour the Waking
World” to jednak przede wszystkim cholernie mroczny, nierozerwalny monolit.
Dlatego też wspomniałem wcześniej o czarnej dziurze, bowiem tych kompozycji nie
da się słuchać pojedynczo. Początkowo obawiałem się, czy dziewięćdziesiąt minut
to aby nie za wiele. Po jakimś czasie zorientowałem się, iż słucham tej płyty
już trzeci raz z rzędu, i to chyba tylko dlatego, że organizm zaczął
przypominać mi o niezbędnych do życia potrzebach. W gatunku noise / industrial
/ doom / sludge Rot Coven stworzyli dzieło praktycznie idealne, choć na pewno
nie przeznaczone dla każdego i nie łatwe w odbiorze. Jeśli nie boicie się
wyzwań, dajcie sobie szansę. Gwarantuję, że warto.

Well, here we
have another monster, a mind-devourer, from the stable of Aesthetic Death. Rot
Coven's double debut album will soon be released on the aforementioned label.
The first chapter, 'Phase I', saw the light of day in digital form in the
spring of two thousand and twenty. Only now, however, will we receive these
recordings in physical form. "Phase II", on the other hand, is a new
material. Together, this makes an hour and a half of music... or rather a
journey to another dimension. What is "Nightmares Devour the Waking
World"? Rather than forcing myself to break these recordings down into
their constituent parts, let me be brief. It's a kind of black hole that,
assuming we get close enough to it, will suck us in infinitely and take us over
completely. Imagine a concoction of the best of early Swans, Lustmord, MZ 412,
Godflesh, Melvins, Haiku Funeral or even Yeruselem. You say that I'm using
classic cult names to excess? Nothing could be further from the truth. Rot
Coven's music has an eerie heaviness to it, built up with synths, samples and
dark sounds of unknown origin, it has a ritualistic atmosphere, often dictated
in a marching drum rhythm or electronic beats, it has an atmosphere of horror
and an over-the-top narcotic trance. The action on this album generally moves
at a slow, drone-like pace, building a strenuously apocalyptic atmosphere and
keeping the tension level at a consistently high level. This tension at times
is so all-consuming that you feel like literally walking out of your body to
give yourself a bit of relief. Vocals are dosed very sparingly on this album,
only occasionally appearing, as if from behind a curtain, in the form of
distorted screams, growls or declamations. "Nightmares Devour the Waking
World", however, is first and foremost a damn dark, inextricable monolith.
This is why I mentioned the black hole earlier, because these compositions are
impossible to listen to individually. At first I was worried whether ninety
minutes was too long. After a while I realised that I was listening to this
album for the third time in a row, and that was probably only because my body
started reminding me of its physical needs. In the genre of noise / industrial
/ doom / sludge Rot Coven have created a practically perfect work, although
certainly not for everyone and not easy to listen to. If you are not afraid of
a challenge, give yourself a chance. I guarantee it's worth it.
