“To the Great Monolith III”

Sentient Ruin Laboratories 2026

Gruz i katakumby zniknęły niemal całkowicie. W zamian, dookoła nas wyrósł gęsty las, gdzie wstęp mają tylko nieliczny. Las, w którym odbywają się zakazane rytuały. „To the Great Monolith III” to pradawna msza, albo odprawianie czarów. To najbardziej dojrzałe, najbardziej podniosłe nagrania jakie zespół zarejestrował. Void.

“To the Great Monolith III”

Sentient Ruin Laboratories 2026

Life has a way of surprising you. I’d been waiting six years for the follow-up to “To the Great Monolith II”, and when the EP numbered 2.5 finally landed in my hands, I hadn’t even had time to savour it before the final chapter of the trilogy came knocking at my door. I’m listening to “To the Great Monolith III” for the tenth time right now, and I still can’t shake it off, and millions of thoughts are swirling round in my head. How can I put them into words so that it’s brief, yet without overlooking the most important points? First and foremost, let’s start with the fact that the third chapter of “To the Great Monolith” once again features music that’s slightly different from before. We’d already been given a small hint as to its content on the aforementioned EP, but that was merely a fleeting glimpse compared to the supernova-like explosion that is this latest release. The rubble and catacombs have all but vanished. In their place, a dense forest has sprung up all around us, to which only a select few can enter.  A forest where forbidden rituals take place. ‘To the Great Monolith III’ is an ancient mass, or maybe rather a sorcery ritual. These are the most mature, the most solemn recordings the band has ever made. Five compositions constituting a secret celebration, a forgotten rite, the unfolding of which we are allowed to observe from hiding, holding our breath. The music on “III” is, in terms of tempo, somewhat monotonous, yet hypnotic. Often, a given part,  usually unhurried, at most at a marching pace,  loops for several prolonged moments. Meanwhile, incredible things are happening all around it. Tribal drums beat, druids in black hoods blow their horns, keyboard passages flow in the background, and shamans sing. But they sing with such a confident, choral voice (as if they were performing a ritual awaited for thousands of years) that it gives you goosebumps. In fact, the vocals are one of the strongest points on this album. There are whispers, shouts, the aforementioned singing (in both high and low registers), often sounding like incantations, growls, screams, whistles… Does the album ‘Morbid’ ring a bell? Do you remember that drunken chant at the end of the album? Here, too, we have ‘la-la-la-la’, only in this case it’s no laughing matter anymore. “To the Great Monolith III” is an album that keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout, offering no certainty or clues as to what’s about to happen next. It’s an album that, with every listen, burrows deeper and deeper into your mind, eventually taking control. It’s a highly avant-garde album (there are moments on it that even remind me of Polish Wędrowcy-Tułacze-Zbiegi), completely unusual and quite far from generally accepted standards. It’s an album on which purely metal instrumentation has been pushed into the background, though not stripped of its strictly defined functions. For apart from the aforementioned magic, these recordings possess the necessary weight, and by no means veer into symphonic territory, should anyone be inclined to assume as much. If it is highly unlikely these days to record an album that is original, not overexperimental, challenging, yet thoroughly intriguing in every respect, then Death.Void.Terror have done it. ‘To the Great Monolith III’ is a fantastic culmination of a project that has matured and evolved (in the very best sense of the word) with every step. For me, it is definitely one of the best albums I’ve heard this year. Any further recommendation therefore seems superfluous.
