Putain de merde! Ależ mnie francuski Epitaphe
zaskoczył swoim nowym krążkiem. Po rewelacyjnym debiucie był to jeden z
najbardziej wyczekiwanych przeze mnie materiałów pierwszej połowy trwającego
roku i oczekiwania wobec niego miałem wyjątkowo wysokie. Spodziewałem się jednak
totalnej burzy odegranej w jeszcze bardziej awangardowy sposób niż na „I”. Francuzi
natomiast poszli zupełnie inną ścieżką, która, nie będę tego ukrywał, na
początku nieco mnie rozczarowała. Otwierający całość „Sycomore” to akustyczny
utwór w stylu… Opeth. Co prawda następujący po nim „Celestial” rozpoczyna się
faktycznie bardzo intensywnie, lecz szybko okazuje się, iż panowie zdecydowali
się mocno na „II” pokombinować. Nie da się zaprzeczyć, iż trzon ich muzyki
pozostał niezmienny i nadal usłyszeć tu można wpływy choćby Immolation czy
Incantation, momentami także Morbid Angel, lecz zespół bardziej postawił tym
razem na różnorodność i, chyba przede wszystkim, nastrój. Potężne deathmetalowe
akordy, chwilami wjeżdżające w bardziej techniczne rejony, gdzie indziej niemal
hipnotyzujące swoim majestatem (najmocniej chyba w końcówce „Insignificant”),
często przechodzą w zdecydowanie łagodniejsze melodie mogące kojarzyć się z
wczesną twórczością wspomnianych wcześniej Szwedów, a niekiedy nawet niektórymi
wydawnictwami Devina Townsenda (zwłaszcza w środkowej części utworu o bardzo
wymownym tytule – „Melancholia”). Zresztą kompozycja ta, trwająca jak wszystkie
trzy zasadnicze części albumu blisko dwadzieścia minut, zawiera w sobie tyle
kontrastujących ze sobą elementów, że w pierwszej chwili można się zakręcić.
Poza tym, o czym już wspomniałem, znajdziemy w niej także wątki blackmetalowe
rodem z Francji oraz partie saksofonu i czyste wokale. Aby dotrzeć do jądra tej muzyki, na pewno
potrzebna jest cierpliwość i odrobina intymności. Przyznam bowiem, że dopiero w
okolicach piątego odsłuchu zacząłem dostrzegać jej obraz w pełnej krasie. Nie
jest ona łatwa, dla wielu może okazać się nawet niestrawną, choćby biorąc pod
uwagę, iż „II” do płyt krótkich nie należy, jednak warto poświęcić tym
nagraniom kilka wieczorów, bo Epitaphe stworzyli kolorową, pełną zwrotów akcji
opowieść, której słucha się niczym przejmującej i zaskakującej legendy.
Wszystkie składowe są w niej dokładnie wyważone i logicznie poukładane, dzięki
czemu album ten jest zarówno piękny co niepokojący, dokładnie jak zdobiąca go
okładka. Myślę zatem, iż zabawię przy nim zdecydowanie dłużej, niż początkowo
podejrzewałem. Po raz kolejny potwierdza się bowiem zasada, że im dłużej muzyka
wchodzi, tym głębiej się w głowie zakorzenia.

Putain de merde!
The French Epitaphe totally surprised me with their new album. After a
sensational debut, it was one of the most awaited by me materials of the first
half of the year and I had extremely high expectations for it. However, I
expected a total storm played in an even more avant-garde way than on
"I". The French, on the other hand, went down a completely different
path, which, I will not hide it, at first disappointed me a bit. Opening the
whole "Sycomore" is an acoustic track in the style of... Opeth. It is
true that the following "Celestial" actually begins very intensively,
but it soon turns out that the gentlemen decided to diversify strongly on
"II". There is no denying that the core of their music has remained
unchanged and you can still hear here the influences of Immolation or
Incantation, sometimes also Morbid Angel, but this time the band focused more
on variety and, probably above all, mood. Powerful death metal chords,
sometimes entering more technical areas, elsewhere almost mesmerizing with
their majesty (probably the strongest at the end of "Insignificant"),
often turn into much milder melodies that may be associated with the early work
of the aforementioned Swedes, and sometimes even with some releases of Devin Townsend
(especially in the middle part of the song with a very meaningful title –
"Melancholy"). Anyway, this composition, lasting, like all three main
parts of the album, nearly twenty minutes, contains so many contrasting
elements that at the first moment you can get dizzy. In addition to what I have
already mentioned, we will also find black metal inspirations straight from
France, saxophone parts and clean vocals. To get to the core of this music, you
definitely need patience and a bit of intimacy. I admit that it was only around
the fifth session that I began to notice its image in all its glory. It is not
easy, for many it may even turn out to be indigestible, especially considering
that "II" does not belong to short albums, but it is worth devoting a
few evenings to these recordings, because Epitaphe have created a colorful,
full of twists and turns story, which you listen to like to a poignant and
surprising legend. All components are carefully balanced and logically
arranged, thanks to which this album is both beautiful and disturbing, exactly
like the cover decorating it. So I think I'll be entertaining it much longer
than I initially suspected. Once again, the principle that the longer the music
takes to sink in you, the deeper it takes root in the head is confirmed.
