ARMORY
"Mercurion"
Dying Victims Productions 2022
The Swedish youth quintet Armory on their third
full-length album does nothing that we havn’t heard before in their
performance. "Mercurion" is therefore a natural continuation of their
previous album ("The Search") from four years ago. It can even be
said that the new album starts where its predecessor ended, which will
undoubtedly put the fans of the band into a state of deep ecstasy. So we are
still dealing with pure Heavy / Speed Metal with a characteristic,
Scandinavian melody. But don't be afraid. This melodiousness does not blunt the
edges of this material at all, because they are not cute lines for soft
metalheads in latex pants and skirts. This music has the claw all the time, can
strike hard and injects quite a dose of classic venom. The group from
Gothenburg blends the successful Power / Thrash from the turn of the 80's and
90's on this album with more modern Heavy / Speed Metal techniques and a bit
of relatively heavy, progressive influences oriented towards dark sci-fi. It
mainly takes place in the field of finger speeding on the guitar neck, but also
other aspects of their work, headed by a galloping bass guitar, which keeps
kicking some awesome twist. It is also marked by a mix of tradition and
modernity (of course in a positive sense of the word). We will also find here a
few surprises that will undoubtedly color the lot, and at the same time give
this production a healthy kick. These can certainly include the sulfurous
Thrash Metal chords, delicious solo parts supported sometimes by the Hammond
keys, or "laser" samples (fortunately sparingly used), which
emphasize the cosmic concept of this album. Undoubtedly, the Swedish Armory
explores ambitious musical spaces here. Because "Mercurion" has at
least several dimensions to penetrate, it is worth spending a moment to exlopre
them, at least for a while. With all its madness, one could say that the
classically revisionist character of this record is damn dynamic, and all the
songs are precise, catchy and can effectively put a scythe under the ribs of
the listener. I can hear that the guys love the works of Agent Steel, Helstar,
Exciter, Anvil, Iron Angel, Living Death, or Angel Dust, so if any of these
bands causes your blood pressure to increase and your nipples harden, it's the
newest Armory plate you can grab without asking. You will not be disappointed.
Very good, based on Heavy / Speed Metal roots album. I recommend it not only
to maniacs of the genre.
