No i oto mamy przed sobą kolejne niecodzienne
wydawnictwo z Aesthetic Death, w postaci debiutanckiej płyty australijskiego
Estrangement. Teoretycznie muzyka na tym albumie definiowana jest jako funeral
doom, jednak w tym konkretnym przypadku określenie to jest tak płytkie, jak
kałuża po niewielkich opadach deszczu. Dlatego, iż muzyka, ogólnie stricte
metalowa wcale na „Disfigurementality” nie dominuje. Owszem, sporo tutaj
fragmentów akustycznych, bardzo nastrojowych, pojawiają się także ciężkie,
miażdżące akordy w stylu funeralnym jak i blackmetalowe tremolo we fragmentach
szybszych. Jest to jednak wyłącznie kręgosłup twórczości zespołu. Kręgosłup
który zatruty został choćby przez niesamowicie pokręcone partie instrumentów
klasycznych, przeplatających się niczym rój węgorzy na dnie jeziora i
tworzących mentalnie upośledzone klimaty. Niektóre tematy melodyczne
pojawiające się na tym krążku mogłyby z powodzeniem stanowić podkład muzyczny
do wyjątkowo chorego przedstawienia teatralnego lub filmu Davida Lyncha. Słuchając tych nagrań otacza nas żywy mrok,
mamroczący do ucha w nieznanym języku z taką intensywnością, że można popaść w
lekki obłęd. Niebanalną rolę odgrywają tutaj także wokale o sporej różnorodności,
stanowiące nie tylko sposób ekspresji lirycznej, lecz także dodatkowy instrument,
uwypuklający poszczególne, pojawiające się w danym momencie emocje. Niskie,
kapłańskie zaśpiewy pogłębiają nastrój religijny, wręcz rytualny a atakujące
znienacka wrzaski i krzyki mogą autentycznie przerażać, tylko po to, by nasz
niepokój został finalnie utulony anielskimi, kobiecymi śpiewami. Dźwięki
zawarte na „Disfigurementality” są niczym sen schizofrenika, często ze sobą
kontrastują i zawierają mnóstwo nieoczekiwanych przejść z ciemności w
oślepiające światło i z powrotem. Takim przykładem może być choćby pojawiający
się w „Fire Voice”, prawie że radosny, fragment folkowy, teoretycznie
kompletnie nie pasujący do całości a jednak stanowiący nierozerwalny jej
element. Powiedzieć, że Estrangement czerpią w swojej twórczości z różnych,
odległych od siebie nurtów muzycznych to mało. Oni czerpią z różnych kultur, a
nawet zaglądają do pradawnych, zapomnianych wierzeń. Zdecydowanie nie jest to
muzyka tła i jedynym sposobem, by odkryć jej głębię jest poświęcenie jej stu
procent uwagi oraz odrobiny czasu. Wiele z zastosowanych tu smaczków odkryjemy
bowiem dopiero wtedy, gdy wchłoniemy już cały unoszący się nad tymi
kompozycjami narkotyczny dym. Wszystkie składowe zostały na tym albumie, niby
przypadkowo, w wyniku improwizacji, lecz jednak niebywale logicznie, poskładane
ze sobą, że brak któregokolwiek elementu czyniłby muzyczną opowieść
„Disfigurementality” niekompletną. Po raz kolejny utwierdzam się w przekonaniu,
że tego rodzaju awangardowe, niełatwe albumy często zapadają w pamięć na dłużej
i głębiej, dostarczają zdecydowanie większych emocji, stanowią swoiste
katharsis. Jeśli nie boicie się rzeczy dziwnych, sprawdźcie sobie debiut
Estrangement. Bo to istotnie niebanalna rzecz.

Well, here we
have before us another unusual release from Aesthetic Death, in the form of the
debut album from Australian Estrangement. Theoretically, the music on this
album is defined as funeral doom, but in this particular case the term is as
shallow as a puddle after a small rainfall. This is because the strictly metal
music does not dominate "Disfigurementality" at all. Yes,
there are a lot of acoustic fragments here, very atmospheric ones, there are
also heavy, crushing chords in funeral style as well as black metal tremolo in
faster fragments. However, this is purely the core of the band's work. The core
that has been poisoned if only by the incredibly twisted parts of classical
instruments, intertwining like a swarm of eels at the bottom of a lake and
creating an atmosphere of mental retardness. Some of the melodic themes
appearing on this album could successfully serve as background music for an
exceptionally sick theatrical performance or a David Lynch’s film. Listening to these recordings, we are
surrounded by a vivid darkness, mumbling into the ear in an unknown language
with such intensity that one can fall into a slight insanity. A non-trivial
role is also played here by vocals of considerable variety, constituting not
only a means of lyrical expression, but also an additional instrument,
emphasizing the individual emotions appearing at a given moment. The low,
priestly chants deepen the religious, even ritualistic mood, and the attacking
shrieks and screams can be genuinely frightening, only for our anxiety to be
finally lulled by angelic, feminine chants. The sounds contained on "Disfigurementality"
are like a schizophrenic's dream, often contrasting with each other and
containing plenty of unexpected transitions from darkness into blinding light
and back again. Such an example would be the almost gleeful folk piece that
appears in "Fire Voice," theoretically completely incompatible with
the whole and yet being an inseparable part of it. To say that Estrangement
draws on a variety of distant musical currents in their work is an
understatement. They draw from various cultures and even look into ancient,
forgotten beliefs. This is definitely not background music, and the only way to
discover its depths is to give it one hundred percent of your attention and a
little time. This is because many of the flavors used here will be discovered
only after one has already absorbed all the narcotic smoke hovering over these
compositions. Some of the components seem to have been put here at random, as a
result of improvisation, but nevertheless together they are so remarkably
logical, that the absence of any of them would make the musical story of
"Disfigurementality" incomplete. Once again, I am reaffirmed in my
conviction that this kind of avant-garde, uneasy albums often sink into the
memory for longer and deeper, provide definitely greater emotions, are a kind
of catharsis. If you are not afraid of strange releases, check out
Estrangement's debut. Because it is indeed a non-trivial thing.
