A review of SAVAGE "Glory Riders"

SAVAGE

"Glory Riders"

Dying Victims Productions 2023

There are at least a few bands called Savage, who stick their sounds from Heavy Metal clay. The most famous of them, of course, is the one from the United Kingdom, which released the excellent "Loose'nLethal" in 1983. However, we will not talk about them today. Tonight our guests are Savage from German Bavaria, who, at the end of October Anno Bastardi 2023, released their first full-length called "Glory Riders" under the Dying Victims Productions banner. On it, these four leather-clad guys with teased hair presented pure, catchy, classic metal, drawing handfuls from the 1980s, which references both the NWOBHM tradition and Hard & Heavy from across the ocean. It's a very even album, the vast majority of which is dominated by strong, marching rhythms (for which juicy drums and thick bass are responsible), canonical in its form, rough riffs complemented by fine quality solo parts, and professional vocals with a characteristic hoarseness that happens after abuse of cold highly mineralized drinks. The content of these minerals in one measure of liquid must be at least 40% though. The album is great to listen to, especially after a few shots, although this treatment is not required. There's a lot to sing along to, you can cut out solos on air guitar, trample your feet over imaginary toms, and bang your head. You can hear inspiration from the work of Iron Maiden, Blaze Bailey undoubtedly threw in his three cents here as well, but it seems to me that the biggest mark on the authors of "Glory Riders" was the work of WASP and early Mötley Crüe, and to a lesser extent the first achievements of Twisted Sister and Lizzy Borden. While the core of Savage's music is definitely traditional Heavy Metal, you will also encounter some unexpected twists on this album, led by interesting guitar lines, dirty pulsing bass, or hard tapping drums. I like this album and its rootsy sound, but most of all I like the motoric nature of the songs, as well as the fact that no one tries to charge unnecessarily on this album, and the main emphasis here is on feisty riffs and rough solos. So I'm waiting for the second word from the Bavarians, for the first is strong and loud. I hope the guys will speak reasonably soon, and in the meantime I'm back to rage again with "Glory Riders”.
