A review of Fly! “...or Die!”

Fly!

“...or Die!”

Dying Victims Prod. 2025

When I looked at the name of this Australian band, I was momentarily reminded of a classic horror film from the late 1980s. Those who are already old will remember. I need to refresh myself the movie one day. Aside from the name, of course, it has nothing to do with the debut album of the new fry of Dying Victims Productions. Although, fuck, maybe that’s not really true. Because if you look at what we find on this album, after all, it's sounds like they're from that decade, albeit its earlier period. The gentlemen treat us with “metal rock'n'roll”, as I call the energetic and danceable combination of heavy metal and hard rock. I don't often reach for this type of sounds, so when turning on “...or Die!” I assumed it would be an adventure for a few dozen seconds, after which the album would end up in the trash. I played the intro, “Highway Fiend”, which actually picked me up like a sports car ride on the highway, then “The Sinner”, “Bowie Knife” with a fantastic solo... and I couldn't get away. First of all, because Fly! are able with their music to grab your attention with the force of an electromagnet. There is no boring lullabies on this album, there is pure racing forward with the gas pedal pressed to the floor. Admittedly, this makes the material a bit homogeneous and monothematic, but since the Kangaroos have chosen the very theme I like best in this musical genre, I was smiling literally until the last second. And I must mention that these ten songs fly by in a flash, like a real fly that gets into a room through an open window to take a wide curve and fly out the same way. The difference is that “... or Die!” by no means flies out with the other ear, but leaves your head with plenty of fragments you want to hum. In fact, each of the tracks on this album is a real hit containing catchy melodic lines, singing refrains and classic solo parts that make you want to play air guitar. In addition, old-school singing occurs here in the form of solo singing, choruses, a male-female duet (in “Loser”) or a vocal timbre vividly reminiscent of Brian Johnson from AC/DC (“6-Pack”), which in this respect certainly adds to the appeal of the whole. Damn, the last time my head danced like this was a few years ago, when I was listening to the second album by Ukrainian Gasoline Guns. And since Fly! have a track called “Gasoline” on the album, there are actually more things in common between these bands than just music. Well, what more to write here... Grab this album, open a cold beer and listen till you drop. Fantastic, relaxing yet entertaining material. Standing ovations!
