Phantasmagore
"Insurrection or Submission"
Dawnbreed Rec. 2022
With the help of Chile's Phantasmagore we're going to the graveyard
today, to taste rotting meat. Yes, it's a fact that the mentioned country is
primarily associated with death / thrash or black / thrash, but reach for
"Insurrection Or Submission" and you'll see that playing straight from
the crypt is by no means an unknown profession in this beautiful corner of the
world. To get a better idea of what you'll find on this EP take a look at the
tasty cover. Isn't it direct? To the point then. Death metal, pure as a tear.
Played thoroughly old-school way, created on the basis of inspirations flowing
in a wide stream from the nineties. You won't find any modernity on these
recordings. Nor will you find anything that breaks the framework of the genre
to any degree. Instead, it stinks here of decaying corpses and catacomb mold.
Phantasmagore's compositions are primarily based on heavy chords. Perfectly
balanced, smoothly transitioning from fast passages to decidedly slower ones,
in which one can clearly hear the lessons learned from Incantation, but also
the Finnish school, mainly thanks to the characteristic melodicism of some
parts. There were also moments of punk
music, but after all, it was this genre that inspired the greatest precursors
of death metal art. The Chileans feel at home at any field, both in fast action
and slow conquering of territory. Significantly, despite the lack of catchy
choruses, the music gets deep into your head pretty quickly, infecting you with
its deadpan and dead meat rolling maggots. A great job is done on these
recordings by the vocals, deep and very corpse-like, puking up bile and
undigested stomach contents. And if we add to this a strongly organic yet
pretty clear sound, I don't think anything more needs to be added.
"Insurrection or Submission" is an infection that, once it attacks
the body, will unhurriedly, but inevitably, lead to ultimate death. And that's
probably what death metal is supposed to be by definition, isn't it? So put
your headphones on and head off to a nearby necropolis, to feed yourself with
what voices in your head tell you.
