A review of Burial Curse „Burial Curse”

„Burial Curse”

Dawnbreed Rec. 2022

While reviewing the Obsidian Hooves debut album at the end of last year, I wondered when, considering his countless projects, I would come across the name of Moran again. Well, I didn't have to wait long. Dawnbreed Records has just released the reissue of last year's debut EP by Burial Curse, in which Jared also has his hands. However, the very fact of re-issuing this material on a silver disc, considering that the tape has been long sold out, makes me happy as hell, because these five compositions are exactly what I am seeking for in music: dirty, repulsive metal, not dressed in a fancy sound. And this is what music on “Burial Curse” sounds like indeed. Based on heavy chords, intertwining like snakes in a pit, sometimes hidden in the background, sometimes passing to the fore, initially creating an impression of disorder and spontaneity. But nothing could be more misleading. It is enough to spend literally a few momentst on these sounds to fall into the snares of sonic evil that lurks here behind every corner. Through the tarry riffs, grinding slowly and consistently, sometimes turning into undulating tremolo, elsewhere looming in the background with a slight dissonance, pierce the drums, sounding very basic and primitive, sometimes tapping out rhythms in a very chaotic and sloppy manner, which of course I count as a positive here. In turn, the guitar parts that flow to the top in some fragments contain a poisonous melody, resembling a siren's singing in the storm-raged sea. The vocal, on the other hand, acts rather as an additional instrument, mumbling something in the background in a sepulchral and not very sublime way. The whole album sounds almost indecently primitive, organic and analogue, plus at the same time being extremely massive, sufficiently legible and in all respects honest. Imagine a mixture of Portal, Dead Congregation, Conqueror, Incantation and Disembowelment thrown into one cauldron and you will get the point of what Burial Curse brings. Fuck, this material is absolutely outstanding, totally addictive and breathtaking. I sincerely hope that Jared will treat us with another dump truck of such excellent quality rubble, because for such recordings they are to die for.
