A review of Reaper "Viridian Inferno"

Reaper

"Viridian Inferno"

Dying Victims Prod. 2022

With bands with the same name it usually happens that one of them stands out and the rest is only the background. As you may remember, three years ago I strongly praised "Unholy Nordic Noise", the band's made in Sweden album number one. Today I have a kind of deja vu, because I'm listening to Reaper's, this time from Australia, debut album, one of the band that plays stylistically very similar music, and what's more, at the same level. Not only at the level, but also inspired by the same classics. On "Viridian Inferno" we find thirty minutes of music directly and deliberately inspired by the names that influenced the development of the metal scene, which cannot be overestimated. Simple and uncomplicated music, and at the same time extremely catchy and causing shivers down the spine on everyone who grew up at the turn of the eighties and nineties. As Australians do not play with hidden inspirations and ripp off straight from what is best in old metal, I will not fuck around with sublime descriptions either. Thrash. Or maybe thrash / black, played in faster tempos, in which you can clearly hear the echoes of the early Bathory, Venom or even Motorhead at times. Speaking of speed, of course, I mean the standards prevailing in the aforementioned period, which does not mean that gentlemen are not able to move neatly also in slower areas, of which they give clear evidence from time to time. The main advantage of Reaper's debut, however, is definitely an old-fashioned atmosphere, reflected not only in the arrangements but also in a strongly analog sound. Listening to this album, we can get the impression that we have moved back in time by at least three decades. There is a lot of groove, aggression and primary anger, which the metal scene boiled with at the moment when unforgettable hordes were born. That we won't find originality here? That it has all been played before? That this kind of musiac has already been kind of overeating? Bullshit! I don't know how many albums of such good quality would have to come out that I would get bored with this type of sound. And I am convinced that I am not alone behind the banner of old school metal that Reaper refreshes so wonderfully. Bang your head for Satan, tread the cross, burn your local church. Or get the fuck off! Viridian Inferno is the quintessence of the old school, even if I’m repeating myself now.
