Kojarzycie nazwę Phenocryst? Zapewne nie, bo to nowy twór na metalowej mapie świata. Ale jeśli podrzucę wam takie hasła jak Summon, Archaic Tomb czy Concilium, to liczę, iż mam w tej chwili waszą pełną atencję. Debiutancki materiał zespołu, szeregi którego zasilają muzycy wspomnianych przed chwila składów, to pięcioutworowa EP-ka, na której znajdziemy dwadzieścia trzy minuty muzyki gęstej i klejącej. Można powiedzieć, że podczas trwającego letargu Summon, deathmetalowa smoła płynąca w żyłach mieszkańców Półwyspu Iberyjskiego znalazła inne ujście, właśnie w postaci Phenocryst. Muzykę tych zespołów łączy wiele. Podobnie masywne i dudniące jest ich brzmienie oraz sposób budowania kompozycji. Nie ma w nich chwytliwych refrenów czy klasycznego podziału na zwrotki i refren. Tu dźwięki zalewają słuchacza ze wszystkich stron a ich intensywność może wywoływać chwilami uczucie klaustrofobii. Potęgowane jest ona w chwilach, gdy panowie zdecydowanie zwalniają, nacierając przytłaczającymi, nieco psychodelicznymi akordami. Sekcja rytmiczna działa tu raczej na zasadzie mechanicznego ubijania kafarem, najczęściej wybijając nieskomplikowany, powtarzalny rytm. Podobnie prosta sprawa jest z wokalem, który przebija się jakby z drugiego planu w dość monotematycznej, charczącej postaci. Jedynie raz na jakiś czas w tle pojawia się jakiś bardziej chwytliwy czy melodyjny motyw, dzięki czemu muzyka Phenocryst nie jest jedynie niczym twarda, jednolicie czarna bryła. Ta odrobina powietrza wpuszczana wąskim lufcikiem potrzebna jest jedynie po to, by nie zdusić odbiorcy zbyt szybko, lecz podtrzymywać go półprzytomnego przy życiu. Płytę wieńczy utwór instrumentalny, niesamowicie mroczny i intrygujący, będący jednocześnie podsumowaniem istoty ciemności przez która udało nam się przebrnąć. Powiem wam, że ten niepozorny, krótki materiał potrafi z czasem naprawdę ostro zryć beret. Początkowo jawił mi się on jako wydawnictwo średnie, ewentualnie całkiem niezłe. Dopiero kiedy przysiadłem do niego na poważnie, odkrył przede mną niezauważone początkowo odcienie mroku. Dlatego też nie uważam, że jest to muzyka łatwa, choć maniacy wymienionych na wstępie zespołów nie powinni mieć problemów by zanurzyć się w jej obrzydliwości i czerpać z niej diabelską rozkosz. Niezły początek. Sam nie wiem, czy wolałbym od chłopaków kolejny album Archaic Tomb czy duży debiut Phenocryst. Choć najlepiej to i to. Poproszę.

Do you know the name Phenocryst? Probably not, because it is a new creation on the metal world map. But if I drop you monikers like Summon, Archaic Tomb or Concilium, I hope I’m having your full attention. The band's debut material, the lineup of which consists of the musicians of the aforementioned ensembles, is a five-track EP featuring twenty-three minutes of dense and sticky music. It can be said that during the ongoing Summon lethargy, the death metal tar flowing in the veins of the inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula found a different outlet, precisely in the form of Phenocryst. The music of these bands has a lot in common. Similarly massive and rumbling is their sound and the way the compositions are built. There are no catchy choruses or the classic verse and chorus division. Here the sounds flood the listener from all sides and their intensity may at times evoke a feeling of claustrophobia. It is intensified in moments when the gentlemen slow down decisively, rubbing overwhelming, slightly psychedelic chords. The rhythm section works rather on the principle of mechanical beating with a pile driver, most often beating an uncomplicated, repetitive rhythm. A similarly simple matter is with the vocal, which seems to appear from the background in a rather monothematic, wheezing form. Only once in a while there is a more catchy or melodic theme in the background, thanks to which Phenocryst's music is not just a hard, uniformly black lump. This little air, let in through a narrow barrel, is needed only so as not to choke the recipient too quickly, but to keep him half-conscious alive. The album is crowned with an instrumental track, incredibly dark and intriguing, which is also a summary of the essence of darkness through which we’ve just managed to get through. Let me tell you that this inconspicuous, short material can really possess you with time. Initially, it appeared to me as a medium release, at best quite good. But only when I sat down to it seriously did it reveal the initially unnoticed shades of darkness. Therefore, I do not think that it is easy music, although the fans of the bands mentioned at the beginning should have no problems plunging into its abominations and enjoying it. Nice start. I don't know if I would prefer another Archaic Tomb album or a full lenght Phenocryst debut from the boys. Both would be best.
