"When
Sanity Becomes Insanity"
Dying Victims Prod. 2022
Have I already mentioned that I have no words recently about the powerful condition of the Chilean scene? Of course I have, more than once. Looking at the number of above-average bands that it spits out, you can actually fall into the title insanity here. The debut of Suffering Sights was released last year, but only on the local Burning Coffin Records, so in Europe it wasn’t available on every store shelf. But what are Dying Victims Productions for? The label run by a guy who keep his feet on the ground and can perfectly scout for such pearls. Because "When Sanity Becomes Insanity" actually is an album that deserves more attention in all respects. How do you get it then? Well, with all of your-fucking-self. The atmosphere characteristic for the mentioned country has been perfectly mixed, in this thirty-seven-minute-long material, with the old Teutonic thrash school, with its very characteristic riffing, and with a small admixture of very early death metal from the overseas. Maybe I'm starting ass-backwards, but listen to how fucking old school the highest quality solos, with which this material is packed up like a minefield here, sound like. Pay attention to the work of the drummer, who, apart from tapping out basic rhythms, serves us quite a lot of extraordinary bits in the background. Listen to these wild vocals, slightly tweaked with classic reverb. Anyway, the singer strongly surprises at times, spitting out the verses at the speed of Uzi. Notice how wonderful the bass purrs in the closing "Corrupted Childhood". Suffering Sights is nothing like a retro band. This is in fact music straight from the end of the eighties and if someone didn’t know, they would be able to believe that this is when these songs were recorded. The guys do not spare themselves, tormenting with different riffs, each sharp as a samurai sword, and the multitude of ideas passing through this album can shock you. Supposedly the genre performed by the band is already well fleshed out and kinda hermetic, but forget about any monotony in this case. This is largely due to the fact that the Santiago quartet have mastered their instruments to perfection, the first example of which is the instrumental "Punishment Voids". These guys know exactly when to accelerate and when to slow down. Not only can they chop like a cabbage slicer, but also give you a not banal acoustic track like "Between Madness and Reality". Do you need comparisons? There you go. The first basic references are Death, Possessed, early Kreator, early Sepultura, and in "Worthy Acts of Hate" I can even hear my native Kat. Fuck, this album is as enjoyable to listen to as the classic pillars of the death or thrash metal scene from a few decades ago. Hardly any band moves me se deeply. From today Suffering Sights becomes one of them. A phenomenal album!
