A review of TANGENT "Tangent"

 TANGENT

"Tangent" (Ep)

Dying Victims Productions 2022

Tangent is an Australian trio playing traditional Hard & Heavy. These gentlemen already have a lot of experience related to this genre, because they have polished their skills before, for example, at Demons Gate, Outcast, or Convent Guilt. The end of January this year brought us their debut EP, which was taken care of by Dying Victims Productions. The content of this 24-minute material consists of four tracks, after hearing of which all lovers of traditional forms of metal expression will applaud with satisfaction. "Tangent" is a journey to the early 1980s, both in terms of the structure of individual compositions and the characteristic feeling of those years. The band from the Antipodes honestly and passionately cuts out classic notes in which the heart of Rock'n'Roll beats with unflagging energy. This album therefore offers strong, moderate tempo, catchy, melodic, sharp riffs that can be boldly hummed while shaving, and very good, conventional solos. The vocalist does not charge and does not sound like he is screwed up, but uses a strong, solid voice with a drunken hoarseness that fits like a glove with the music contained in this production. Even some minor mistakes and technical shortcomings that happened to him in a few moments have their undeniable charm and, as for mine, do not have a negative impact on the perception of these sounds. Instead of a sterile, faceless sound, the Australians opted for an authentic, organic production with a warm, old school vibe, which makes the material sway pleasantly, which does not mean that it can't sell a kick in the butt, especially when Fongy unleashes his strings. It is clear that the NWOBHM formations led by Saxon are a huge source of inspiration for Tangent, but undoubtedly, overseas bands, such as Omen or Tokyo Blade, also left their mark in their work. All those who are looking for extreme sensations in Metal with inverted crosses and pentagrams at the forefront, or other entrails and torn bodies, can let go of this production without regret. It's not that fairy tale. However, if someone appreciates having fun in the spirit of dirty, spicy Hard & Heavy from four decades ago, they should write the name Tangent in their notebook and wait for their full album. First, however, understandably, they are required to purchase the discussed material, here and now.
