A review of Gallower "Eastern Witchcraft"

"Eastern Witchcraft"

Dying Victims Prod. 2022

It's kind of funny. Silesian Gallower, although they started their activity seven years ago, had to go under the wings of a German label for their music to finally reach me. Hadn't there been a label on our land interested in this type of music, that would be able to promote it a bit? Well, never mind. I don't know "Behold the Realm of Darkness", the full-length debut of these gentlemen, but after what they present on "Eastern Witchcraft", I would say that it will definitely be worth catching up. The new EP of the band brings five tracks, lasting together a little over a quarter of an hour, straight from an analogue record. And I don't mean the current represses, but the time when the CD format was just beginning to crawl. So the eighties and the era of thrash / speed metal splendor and the ancestors of black and death metal bow to us. Anyway, it was a beautiful time in this respect, no one cared about labeling genres too much, you just played what flowed from your heart. And that's exactly what Gallower does. You can hear that the guys feel this old spirit perfectly. Or they got hooked up with Dr. Emett Brown and got lost in time. What can be said about their music that wouldn't sound banal? For example, the fact that I am blown away here by the outstanding work of the guitars, the old school chords at full speed, sounding like classic moments, but even more speeded up. They go together with excellent rhythm section, seemingly simple, but also not limited to the role of a statistician. And vocals. Tzar has a very original timbre and an incredibly honest way of expression, perfectly matching the lot. Mainly based on a strong singing shout, sometimes catching up with traditional sounding higher registers. Each of the compositions  here is such a small trip into the past, and if you close your eyes and you are in your late forties, I won't be surprised if for a moment you remind yourself the moments when you lay in bed with headphones on, after midnight, wondering if to fall asleep, or is it better to continue listening to your favorite album until dawn. Additionally, "Eastern Witchcraft" actually sounds like old recordings, thoroughly analog and at the same time very predatory. Does anyone need to be encouraged even more to check this material? I don't think so, because who, after reading my thoughts, is going to do it, will do it. A very valuable release. I am going to write the guys with a question about an available copy of the debut, because I will definitely buy it. Do the same and wait for this EP, because such bands are worth supporting.
