WITCHUNTER
"Metal Dream"
Dying Victims Productions 2022
Witchunter is an Italian brigade formed in 2007, that
loves traditional Metal above all. So where could their third full-length have
been released, if not under the banner of the tireless Dying Victims
Productions? If not there, well, probably nowhere. Nowhere Records is an
uninteresting option, however, so the band chose the Dying Victims company, and
very rightly so. So on "Metal Dream" the quintet from Italy presents
us with racy, pugnacious, juicy Heavy Metal that genre lovers will fall in love
with from the first listening. For Witcher's music is based as much on the
origins of NWOBHM as it is on classic string jerking from overseas, as well as
on the seeds of the style later called Speed Metal. So the guys drive wild, and
you can hear that they hold the 80s in the highest esteem. However, it's not
only the intense, gritty, fast Heavy that this album breathes, although of
course there's most of it here. In between these canonical, at times almost
textbook textures of sound there are also swirling elements of conventional
rock from more than five decades ago, reeking faintly of psychedelia and early
prog. Listening to "Metal Dream" it's hard not to have associations
with classic albums of the genre and music in the style of early Iron Maiden, Saxon, Angel Witch,
Judas Priest, Tygers of Pan Tang, Riot V, American Omen, or the first
productions of Manowar, but these crazy Maccaronis leave their individual cut
in this music, which proves that they are not interested in being another retro
band. They are definitely interested in something more, and judging by this
album, it seems to me that they are on the right track to achieve it. Well, and
to my mind, all is clear, and if so, there is no need to shred any more words in
vain. A very good, even canonical record, which perfectly goes to the heart of
the genre. In addition, it has another advantage. It is like a well-made
alcohol of our own making. It enters smoothly and effortlessly, but at the same
time kicks specifically. An overdose can therefore end in profuse vomiting and
a spectacular passing out. So use it as directed in the accompanying booklet,
without contacting your doctor or pharmacist.
