Przed chwilą, recenzując najnowszy album
francuskiego Mutterlein, napomknąłem o „niemetalowych” wydawnictwach Aesthetic
Death. Kolejne z nich mam właśnie przed sobą, a jest nim trzeci krążek
amerykańskiego The Slumbering, projektu, który przedstawiany był już na łamach
Apocalyptic Rites. W zasadzie każdy, komu wcześniejsze płyty rzeczonego tworu
kompletnie nie podeszły, także i ten może ominąć szerokim łukiem. Nie
znajdziemy bowiem na nim nic, czego nie słyszelibyśmy na „Looking For Sorrow
Within One’s Fear” czy „When We Forget, It Repeats”. To cały czas ta sama,
duszna, drone’owa nisza, dźwięki skierowane jedynie do tych, którzy w podobnych
klimatach gustują, i lubią czasem zabrać się w podróż po najmroczniejszych
obszarach ludzkiego umysłu. Trzeba przyznać, że muzyk pod tym względem jest
niesamowicie konsekwentny, bowiem tworzone przez niego dźwięki ani o milimetr
nie przesunęły się w kierunku muzyki bardziej przystępnej, chwytliwej czy
ogólnie akceptowalnej. „The Loss of Humanity Complete” to bardzo powolne
malowanie dźwiękami, tworzenie obrazu świata, który nie istnieje. Albo inaczej,
istnieje, ale jedynie w głowie autora. Rządzą w nim koszmary, zarówno te z
dzieciństwa, jak i współczesne. Wszechobecność na tym albumie negatywnych
emocji, przede wszystkim strachu i przerażenia, jest przytłaczająca.
Jednocześnie dźwięki te są tak gęste, że topiąc się w nich znikąd nie widać
ratunku. Pozostaje zatem jedynie powolne opadanie w głąb, duszenie się każdym
kolejnym wybrzmiewającym tonem, każdym akordem wpełzającym do wnętrza głowy,
nie tylko uszami, ale ustami i nosem. Podkreślić należy, że przekaz muzyki The
Slumbering potęgowany jest ciężkimi, zaburzającymi płynny odbiór efektami,
przesterami, zarówno na wokalach jak i poszczególnych instrumentach, dzięki
czemu obcowanie z nią bynajmniej nie jest ani łatwe, ani przyjemne. Te nagrania
potrafią sprawiać niemal fizyczny ból i negować każdą kiełkującą w umyśle
odbiorcy pozytywną myśl czy promyk nadziei. Teoretycznie „The Loss of Humanity
Complete” to pięć kompozycji, jednak stanowiących całość, pewien ciąg, który
śledzi się na zasadzie oglądania filmu grozy. Jeśli macie zatem ochotę na
muzyczny odpowiednik „Koszmaru z Ulicy Wiązów część III”, to serdecznie
zapraszam. Jeśli w tego rodzaju dźwiękach nie gustujecie, nic tu po was.

A while ago,
reviewing the latest album by French Mutterlein, I hinted at “non-metal”
releases by Aesthetic Death. I have another one right in front of me at this
very moment, and it is the third album of the American The Slumbering, a
project that has already been presented in the pages of Apocalyptic Rites. In
fact, anyone who didn't like the previous records of this creation, can skip
this one too. There is nothing on it that we didn’t hear on “Looking For Sorrow
Within One's Fear” or “When We Forget, It Repeats”. It's all the same, soulful,
drone niche, sounds aimed only at those who have a taste for similar atmosphere,
and like to take an occasional trip into the darkest areas of the human mind.
It must be admitted that the musician is incredibly consistent in this regard,
as the sounds he creates haven’t moved even a millimeter towards more
accessible, catchy or generally acceptable music. “The Loss of Humanity
Complete” is a very slow painting with sounds, creating a picture of a world
that does not exist. Or in other words, it exists, but only in the author's
head. It is ruled by nightmares, both those of childhood and contemporary ones.
The omnipresence of negative emotions on this album, primarily fear and terror,
is overwhelming. At the same time, these sounds are so dense, that drowning in
them you can’t expect any rescue. Thus, all that is left is a slow descent into
the depths, suffocating with each successive resounding tone, each chord
crawling inside the head, not only with the ears, but with the mouth and nose.
It should be emphasized that the message of The Slumbering's music is amplified
by heavy, disruptive effects, overdrives, both on vocals and individual
instruments, so that interacting with it is by no means easy or pleasant. These
recordings can cause almost physical pain and negate any positive thought or
ray of hope germinating in the listener's mind. Theoretically, “The Loss of
Humanity Complete” is five compositions, but they constitute a whole, a certain
sequence that one follows like watching a horror film. So if you have a taste
for the musical equivalent of “A Nightmare on Elm Street Part III,” you are
cordially invited. If you don't have a taste for this kind of sound, nothing
here for you.
