A review of Baphomet's Blood “Satanic Metal Attack”

Baphomet's Blood

“Satanic Metal Attack”

Dying Victims Prod. 2026

Damn, I love this label! Well, sort of, since their pure heavy metal releases don’t always hit the spot for me, but when it comes to speed, thrash, or death metal, you can buy their stuff with your eyes closed. And while you’re at it, you can learn some history, because every now and then Florian digs up bands out of the devil’s ass that I’ve never heard of before, but which were an essential part of the metal scene a few decades ago. Take the Italian band Baphomet’s Blood, for example. A band that recorded their debut album exactly twenty years ago. They went on to record three more, but it’s that first one that’s the subject of today’s text. Holy shit, if the band is named what it’s named, the album title is unambiguous, and the songs are titled “Satanic Commando,” “Speed Metal Warrior,” “Blood, Vomit and Satan,” or, above all, “Satanic Beerdrinkers,” does anyone here even doubt that these Italians know what real oldschool metal is? The guys play like there’s no tomorrow, drawing heavily on the legacy of Venom and other classics, using riffs that are cliché (at least from today’s perspective). Cliché, but, for the hundredth time, so catchy that you simply can’t sit still to this music! “Satanic Metal Attack” is music played for the thousandth time to the same old tune, following the rules of the ’80s, sung mainly in clean vocals, with classic forays into higher registers and the obligatory backing vocals. And as clear proof of their nod to oldschool metal, there’s the cover of Fingernails’ “Heavy Metal Forces” included at the end of the album. There’s no point in rambling on about releases like this, because you either love this kind of music or you hate it. I’m soaking up this gem, which I somehow overlooked on my metal journey, like a sponge soaks up water. And I’m asking for more of these throwbacks to the past. A fantastic album.
