Bunker 66
"Portraits
of Dismay"
Dying Victims
Prod. 2023
Well, the time
was high for this. Anyone familiar with Bunker 66 knows perfectly well that the
gentlemen work very systematically, every now and then reminding of their
existence with new releases. Most often these are splits, of which they have
collected seven so far. And since, when
put together, this gives almost an hour of music, the label came up with the
very good idea of releasing all these songs on one CD. For me, this fact is immensely
pleasant, because not all, especially the older, "sevens" are
obtainable at a fair price, and the joyful creativity of this Italian brigade
is what I value a lot. There is one simple reason for. The guys simply play
real metal, as in the good old days, and in a style that exactly reflects my
approach to music. So... "Portraits of Dismay" is a dirty-sounding
mix of thrash and speed metal, laced with a strong punk/crusty flair. In turn,
thanks to the rough vocals, you can also feel the spirit of the second wave of
black metal in these recordings. The music is very straightforward and direct,
kicking in the ass without any fuss or polite approaches. Quite square and
schematic, devoid of technical twists or any combination. Instead, it's full of
great riffs, mostly played at considerable speed, offbeat solo parts and lots
of energy. And those choruses... It is impossible to sit still while listening
to these songs, because the blood in the veins momentarily accelerates and its
pressure causes an unstoppable desire for wild dancing. They have an incredible
groove and that wonderful classic flavor of Venom, Bathory, Destruction or Motorhead.
Besides, it's not without reason that the gentlemen were tempted to record
covers of Convulsed, Carnivore or just Motorhead, directly indicating the bands
that probably were their main inspirations. Great is this compilation. Without
a doubt, from now on it will be one of the first, next to Whipstriker, albums
on the play list for the upcoming house parties with icy vodka and dill pickles.
