If you see two
mustachioed Germans in leather vests and Hellhammer T-shirts in the photo, what
do you think they might be playing? Obviously some old stuff. Otherwise, they
wouldn't be releasing it under the Dying Victims label. Their debut album,
released about three years ago, really messed in my mind, so I was very curious
to see what I would find on “Revered by Death.” Well, I found more or less the
same thing as on “The Appearing”, meaning lively black/punk, played with balls
and a total 80s vibe. Because when I say “black metal,” I don't mean the
second, Scandinavian wave, but the slightly deeper roots of the genre. But
that's not all. Because even if the opening track, “A Pessimistic Soaring,” is
so catchy that your feet just want to dance, and “Die Wiederkehr der Dunkelei”
is no less so, on the next track on the list, “When the Flames Devour You All,”
the guys definitely slow down, treating us to something resembling a ballad, or
at least a very atmospheric and moody composition. Surprised? Wait for the next
one, the ambient acoustic “On Weathered Altar.” Here, you can really drift
away. Then we return to punk/rock/metal tracks, and Karloff treats us to catchy
melodies “like in the old days”. In fact, these recordings remind me a bit of
our Owls Woods Graves or The Relicts. Maybe not literally in terms of music,
but because of similar inspirations and that omnipresent groove. The songs on
this album are short, but they have a lot of energy. I like the drum tracks
here. Theoretically simple, but at times so joyful that when I close my eyes, I
can see a glam drummer with a bandana on his head, playing with one hand raised
and a big smile on his face. It's really fantastic to listen to, and since
“Revered by Death” is only half an hour long and contains nothing but hits, it
automatically starts over again itself when it ends. Check out this album if
you're in the mood for something catchy, old-school, and recorded without any
fuss. For me, it's awesome!
