A review of Furnace Floor "Furnace Floor"

Furnace Floor

"Furnace Floor"

Dawnbreed Rec. 2023

Furnace Floor is a new name in the music landscape. It's uncertain when exactly they formed, but it seems to be relatively recent, as the EP, simply titled "Furnace Floor," is their debut material, released by the band in digital in May of this year. It didn't take long for the recordings to be released in physical form, specifically on cassette tape. The Americans introduce themselves to the world in three chapters, lasting a total of twelve minutes. It may not be much, but enough to make the name memorable. The gentlemen treat us to death/doom metal in the old style, when the romance of these two genres flourished and had not yet managed to fall into the snare of total melancholy. Thus, the chords flow unhurriedly, at times even venturing into the regions nowadays known as funeral doom, hence associations with such classics as Winter or Thergothon seem indispensable. The difference, however, is that Furnace Flood weave a bit more singing guitars into their sound (not to be confused with a sweet melody), which may also bring to mind such names as Disembowelment or Dolorian. The harmonies hidden in the guitar lines are very somber and mysterious, although I'm far from calling Yankee's music a leaden colossus. There's a lot of natural “lightness”, which gives the sounds on "Furnace Floor" more space and doesn't feel completely muggy. So is the sound, organic, massive but not swampy. In addition to the sepulchral atmosphere of these recordings, I like the idea for the vocals. While there's no need to dilate on the growls, as they’re a classic puke, changing its key or overlapping when neccessary, the small additions in the form of muffled verses reminiscent of the last breath cries of a dying man at the bottom of a well, build an atmosphere of deep anxiety here. Furnace Floor have an idea for their music, even though they based it on well-known pillars of the genre. As for me, this EP is a very successful start, automatically setting expectations for the band's future releases at a correspondingly high level. Because now that "A" has been said, it's time for "B". I just hope as soon as possible.
