A review of Larvae "Acid Horror Cult"

Larvae

"Acid Horror Cult"

Dawnbreed Rec. 2022

I am quite prejudiced against women in metal music. Especially those in the death metal faction, trying to growl. They usually sound soft, or at least bland. There are exceptions from the rule, of course, just to mention the legendary Lori Bravo. I telling this because Larvae is a project under the leadership of Lucilla Sericata, who calls the tune in this project and is basically responsible for all the music. I was very skeptical about "Acid Horror Cult," especially since I was not familiar with Larvae's previous recordings. In no time it turned out that in this case literally everything related to this EP harmonizes with each other. The project's name, the title and artwork perfectly reflect what the Italian woman has to say musically. Imagine what a swamp would look like if it boiled. A slow bubbling, splashing sludge, floating to the surface, partially shredded carcass remains and an incredible stench. The sounds contained on "Acid Horror Cult" reek of death and decay. The two compositions included on the wax disc (plus an outro) are an unhurried torture in sludge / doom tempo. The chords flow slowly, at a maximum d-beat tempo, crushing with their mass and sucking all the oxygen out of the atmosphere. Melodies are scarce here, but there's plenty of sick atmosphere, as if from a B-grade horror film, enhanced by minor synth additions. Associations with Winter are most appropriate in this case, except that the sound of these recordings is much more muddled, and the low-tuned guitars may also direct associations in the direction of Mortician on morphine. Listening to these tracks, you can actually feel as if you were sinking into quicksand. However, it is not the music itself that is extraordinary here, as there are few revealing elements, but the vocals. What this, undoubtedly not sane, woman is doing with her voice is a disease in an advanced stage. Deep vomits, probably coming from the colon itself, cringing, possessed screeching, whispering, laughing, declamations or even singing, in a tune of a psychopath humming a lullaby to her child, it's all here. And combined with a simple musical background, it can send shivers down your spine. Undoubtedly, this is not music composed by a sane social individual, so I doubt I would want to find myself alone in a room with Ms. Lucilla, despite the fact that she's quite a hot siniorita. The only objections I have about "Acid Horror Cult" is that this material is so short. I'm eagerly awaiting the next Larvae chapter, even if after such a small dose I'm already feeling a little unhealthy.
