2002"

I wonder how many
of you remember a band called Nirvana 2002? Personally, I only got familiar
with their work a couple of years after they broke up, although probably if it
weren't for a friend who was a maniacal fan of the Swedish scene, I wouldn't
know them until today. Because even if I had glimpsed the name somewhere, I’d
probably have completely ignored it, automatically associating it with the work
of Kurt Kobain, which I somehow never particularly liked. But let’s get to the
point... American Wharflurch released some rather interesting material last
year, though frankly intended, in my opinion, exclusively for collectors of all
sorts of seven-inchers. "Nirvana 2002" (with a fancily redesigned and
updated logo on the cover) features two compositions by the Swedish band performed
by the Americans. You must admit that the idea is unusual, because EPs usually
contain a cover as the form of an addition to a song of the performing band. Here,
we don’t get such. Perhaps for Wharflurch the gentlemen from Edsbyn were such a
great inspiration that they decided to honor them in this way. I conclude so,
because both compositions, i.e. "Slumber" and "Mourning",
are not somehow drastically different from the originals and their performance
is very faithful. Of course, one can look for details here, with which
Wharflurch has rejuvenated those a little forgotten songs, but they are really
minor finishing touches. It is possible that this piece of wax will tip young
searchers off to the trail of a little treasure from the past and encourage
them to dig up the rest of it. All the more so, since the music stands up perfectly
well years later and can serve as an encyclopedic example of old-school Swedish
death metal for adepts. If you like collecting such unusual releases, or want
to have everything Wharflurch has released in your collection, go for this EP.
Maybe there's still a copy left somewhere.
