Speedwhore
"Visions of a Parallel World"
Dying Victims 2023
I heard such a
golden thought somewhere recently, that all these bands from Dying Victims play
the same thing. And this was said by a guy in his late 40s, meaning he was
theoretically raised in the years when genres like heavy, thrash and speed
metal ruled the scene. He was probably nuts. Take the German label's May
releases as examples. Violent Sin, Rapid, or today, Speedwhore. Each of them
interprets the old school in its own way, and in each of these bands you can
find, or rather refresh yourself with, something different. The authors of
"Visions of a Parallel World" come from Berlin, and it is well known
that Germans can play classic thrash like few others. Speedwhore is also
exceptionally successful in upholding the national traditions on the subject,
although the spectrum of their inspiration is definitely broader than merely
reproducing Sodom or Kreator. In addition to the characteristic Teutonic chords
and scratchiness, there is no shortage of more classic heavy-metal shtick in
this music. An example? You're very welcome - "Hologram" is an excellent
heavy metal track, only slightly tweaked, with an excellent solo. In addition,
the gents do not shy away, especially in the slower parts, as such also appear
on the album, from motifs that may remind you of doom metal classics. Not
enough? Well, take a listen to the longest, almost eight-minute long title
track with black metal blasting and Transylvanian moans. Speaking of vocals.
These are mostly aggressively harsh, although the screamer is not at all afraid
of trips into higher tones, which differentiates Speedwhore's compositions in
the same way as the multitude of the inspirations mentioned a few lines above.
The result is a classic-style album that could be a cross-section of the best
of the 80s and 90s of the previous century. This is material in a really good
style. Nothing but listen to and fucking
bang your head.
