Kilka miesięcy temu dałem ostatnią szansę zespołowi,
który w latach dziewięćdziesiątych wręcz uwielbiałem, a który obecnie, jak się
okazuje, jest jedynie popłuczynami po dawnej świetności. Oczywiście mam na
myśli In the Woods… Ponarzekałem sobie miedzy innymi, że bez braci Botteri ten
twór nie powinien nawet nosić nazwy, od której najwyraźniej odcina kupony. No i
oto mamy szybką i bezpośrednią odpowiedź norweskich bliźniaków. Pod szyldem
Nattehimmel dokoptowali sobie jeszcze do składu między innymi byłego wokalistę
In the Woods… , James’a Fogarty’ego, i nagrali „Mourningstar”. Mówiąc krótko,
nie ma nawet sensu porównywać jakości dwóch wymienionych przed chwilą składów. Na
rzeczonym albumie znajdziemy trzy kwadranse muzyki będącej czymś na zasadzie
wypadkowej między In the Woods…. i Green Carnation. Przede wszystkim panowie
potrafią bardzie umiejętne przemieszczać się między klasycznym, leśnym klimatem
blackmetalowych a rockową psychodelą i awangardą. Ich kompozycje to malowany
zręczną ręką mistrza pejzaż przechodzący z nastrojowych, klimatycznych momentów
we fragmenty bardziej agresywne. Słowo „agresja” bynajmniej nie powinno
kojarzyć się tutaj z bezlitośnie zimną surowizną i stoi w zdecydowanej
mniejszości w skali globalnej albumu. Większą część „Mourningstar” stanowi
natomiast bardzo charakterystyczny dla wspomnianych muzyków klimat lekkiej psychodeli
i swobody budowania i dawkowania emocji. Tutaj nie ma nic na siłę. Akordy są
przemyślane i pomyślane, a każda kolejna sekwencja wypływa naturalnie z
poprzedniej. Oczywiście wspomniany indywidualny styl riffowania oraz
umiejętnego ozdabiania piosenek liniami klawiszy może powodować, że usłyszymy
na tym krążku zarówno elementy mogące się kojarzyć z „Heart of the Ages” jak i
„Strange In Stereo”, czy nawet „The Quiet Offspring”. Ja z kolei mogę wam
zagwarantować jedno. Te kompozycje naprawdę z czasem wciągają równie mocno jak
wspomniane klasyki. Wielką różnicę robią tutaj również wokale. Partie śpiewane
chwilami bardzo mocno przypominają mi Jana Kenneth’a Transeth’a, nie tylko pod
względem barwy ale sposobu wyciągania dźwięku. A że przeplatane są przy okazji blackmetalowym
krzykiem, to, podobnie jak muzyka na debiucie Nattehimmel, często grają
kontrastami, czyniąc całość nieprzesadnie urozmaiconą i logicznie wyważoną.
Słuchając „Mourningstar” mam jeszcze jedno nieodparte wrażenie, że panowie
celowo poukładali swoje kompozycje w takiej kolejności, by każda następna
przemawiała do słuchacza jeszcze mocniej, przez co zapadająca po wybrzmieniu
ostatniego tonu cisza zdaje się być niemal boleśnie niewygodna i aż chce się
włączyć płytę od początku. Za taką muzyką tęskniłem od ponad dwudziestu lat.
Wielki In the Woods… powrócił. Co prawda pod nową nazwą, jednak w starej,
dobrej formie. I to właśnie „Mourningstar”, w przeciwieństwie do „Cease the
Day” czy „Diversum”, postawię sobie na półce obok „Strange In Stereo”. A prawie
już umarła we mnie nadzieja…

A few months ago
I gave one last chance to a band that I adored in the nineties, and which now,
as it turns out, is just a washout from its former glory. Of course, I'm
referring to In the Woods... I complained to myself, among other things, that
without the Botteri brothers, this creation shouldn't even carry the name from
which it apparently reaps the benefits. Well, and here we have a quick and
direct answer from the Norwegian twins. Under the Nattehimmel banner, they
co-opted, among others, the former vocalist of In the Woods... , James Fogarty,
and recorded "Mourningstar". In short, there is not even a point in
comparing the quality of the two lineups mentioned above. On the album in
question, you will find three quarters of an hour of music that is something of
an outgrowth between In the Woods.... and Green Carnation. First of all, the
gentlemen are able to move most skillfully between the classic forest
atmosphere of black metal, psychedelic rock and avant-garde. Their compositions
are a landscape painted with the deft hand of a master, moving from moody,
atmospheric moments to more aggressive passages. The word
"aggression" here should by no means be associated with relentlessly
cold rawness, and stands in the decided minority on the album's global scale. The
greater part of "Mourningstar" is the very characteristic for the
aforementioned musicians atmosphere of light psychodelia and ease to build and dose
emotions. There is nothing forced here. The chords are well thought out and
conceived, and each successive sequence flows naturally from the previous one.
Of course, the aforementioned individual style of riffing and skillful
embellishment of songs with keyboard lines may cause us to hear on this album elements
that bring to mind "Heart of the Ages" as well as "Strange in
Stereo" or even "The Quiet Offspring." I can guarantee you one
thing. These compositions really draw you in over time as much as the
aforementioned classics. The vocals also make a big difference here. The
singing parts at times remind me very strongly of John Kenneth Transeth, not
only in terms of timbre but the way the sound is drawn out. And since they are
interspersed on occasion with black metal screaming, they, like the music on
Nattehimmel's debut, often play with contrasts, making the whole not overly
varied and logically balanced. Listening to "Mourningstar" I have yet
another irresistible impression that the gentlemen have deliberately arranged
their compositions in such an order that each subsequent composition appeals to
the listener even more strongly, making the silence that falls after the last
tone almost painfully uncomfortable, and making you want to turn the album on from
the beginning. This is the kind of music I've been longing for for over twenty
years. The great In the Woods... are back. Admittedly under a new name, but in
good old form. And it is "Mourningstar", as opposed to "Cease
the Day" or "Diversum", that I will put on my shelf next to
"Strange in Stereo". And I have almost lost all hope....
