A review of Violent Sin "Serpent's Call"

"Serpent's Call"

Dying Victims 2023

Violent Sin is another young crew from Dying Victims Productions. What this stable specializes in, anyone moderately familiar with the subject should know. Whatever they release, expect it to be oldschool. And this is exactly what the Belgians deliver on their debut "Serpent's Call." Here we find eleven compositions inspired by the speed / thrash metal of the eighties. There's nothing revelatory about this playing, but just as I gulp down all kinds of often identical war metal albums, I'm always eager to taste another retro band. Especially if it can put these already heavily worn-out puzzles back together. The gentlemen clearly draw from the European school, especially the German one, although elements close to the Bay Area also appear in their songs in places. For the most part we'll find here mechanical riffing, hard-forward, with appearing more singable choruses, which make you want to wave your clenched fist. Admittedly, this is playing a bit off the template and mostly on d-beat, but Violent Sin's harmonies are by no means boring. Especially since they're laced with good solo parts and vocals in three different keys. There are no technical stunts here, the songs are simple and direct, one could say banal at times. Nevertheless, this music does not get boring even after many listens. It may not be as much of a punch as their native Bütcher, but as far as I'm concerned Violent Sin quietly gets onto the list of young bands worth having on the shelf. And I would love to see the guys live, because such music is best listened to on stage and with a cold beer in hand. As much as at a house party with a bunch of old friends.
