O istnieniu Ereb Altor dowiedziałem się przypadkowo, podczas osobistego spotkania ze Szwedami w trakcie ich wizyty w Szczecinie, kiedy to grali akurat w ramach występu Isole. No I jakoś tak w trakcie chmielowej gadki obiecałem im, że sprawdzę, z czym ich drugi band się je, i… uczyniłem to wczoraj. Okazją był dziewiąty już krążek zespołu, o którym najczęściej mówi się jako o kontynuatorach wikińskich tradycji Bathory. Czy faktycznie tak jest? Przez dosłownie kilka chwil miałem wątpliwości, gdyż pierwsze takty “I Have the Sky” bardziej skojarzyły mi się z Katatonią niż spuścizną Quorthona. Chwilę później pojawiły się chwyty lekko pod “Twilight of the Gods” i charakterystyczne wokalne “O-o-oooo”. I w sumie o ile początkowo pomyślałem, że Bathory to nie tylko wspomniany zaśpiew, to szybko okazało się, iż faktycznie w muzyce Ereb Altor czuć tego starego ducha w rogatym hełmie. Kompozycje na “Vargtimman” utrzymane są w bardzo nastrojowym klimacie, średnie tempa przeplatane są klimatycznymi wstawkami a silny, czysty wokal unosi się nad muzyką niczym mgła nad taflą jeziora. Bardzo przyjemnie to wszystko buja a ewidentne, choć w sumie nieliczne, wstawki Katatoniopodobne idealnie wpasowują się w całość. Chwilami Szwedom zdarza się nawet mocno przyspieszyć, jak choćby w “Rise of the Destroyer”, co na chwilę przełamuje, na zasadzie imbiru podczas spożywania sushi, dość jednolity smak albumu. Innym, nieco wyłamującym się z całości kawałkiem jest “Den Dighra Doden”, kojarzący mi się w pierwszej chwili z… kurwa, Rammstein? Mniejsza jednak o to, do rzeczy. Nie znajdziecie tu hitów na miarę “Father To Son” (choć nie wiem dlaczego wymieniam akurat ten tytuł, bo cały “Hammerheart” to jebany kult), ale jeśli Ereb Altor wydają właśnie dziewiąty krążek i nie śmierdzi on trupem, to i tak jest to spory sukces. Według mnie ten materiał jest naprawdę dobry, mimo ewidentnych chwilami zrzynek, jak dla przykładu patent gitarowy w połowie “Alvablot”. Zakładając, że jest to pierwszy album Ereb Altor jaki usłyszałem, muszę przyznać, że faktycznie zespół ten zasługuje na uwagę. Czują chłopaki klimat, trochę kombinują po swojemu żeby nie wyszła im kalka… Podziwiam, że tak długo im się chce, pełen, kurwa, szacun. Szkoda, że im wówczas, w Szczecinie nie postawiłem wódki, ale jak się u nas pojawia ponownie, to bankowo nie omieszkam.

I found out about Ereb Altor by accident, during a personal meeting with the Swedes during their visit to Szczecin, when they were performing as part of the Isole lineup. And somehow, during the beer chat, I promised them that I would check what their other band was about, and.. I just did it yesterday. The occasion was the ninth album of the band that is most often referred to as the continuators of Bathory's Viking tradition. Is it really so? For literally a few moments, I had doubts, because the first chords of "I Have the Sky" reminded me more of Katatonia than Quorthon's legacy. A few seconds later there were tunes slightly "Twilight of the Gods"- like, and the characteristic "Oh-oh-ooooh" on vocals. Even if at first I thought that Bathory was not only the aforementioned singing, it quickly turned out that in the music of Ereb Altor you can actually feel this old spirit in a horned helmet. The compositions on "Vargtimman" are kept in a very romantic atmosphere, the medium paces are interspersed with atmospheric parts and the strong, clean voice rises above the music like a mist over the lake. It all flows very nicely, and the obvious, though in total few, Katatonia-like influences fit perfectly into the whole. At parts the Swedes sometimes even speed up a bit, like in "Rise of the Destroyer", which for a moment breaks, on the basis of ginger while eating sushi, the fairly uniform taste of the album. Another, a bit out of sync with the whole track is "Den Dighra Doden", which I at first associated with ... fucking Rammstein? It doesn't matter. You will not find here hits like "Father To Son" (although I do not know why I mention this very title, because the whole "Hammerheart" is a fucking cult), but if Ereb Altor is just releasing the ninth album and it does not smell like a corpse, it still is quite a success. In my opinion, this material is really good, despite obvious copycatting at times, like for example a guitar patent in the middle of “Alvablot”. Assuming this is the first Ereb Altor album I've ever heard, I have to admit that the band really deserves attention. The guys feel the atmosphere, they try to do their own thing so that they do not come out with a carbon paper ... I admire that they want to do what they do for so long, full, fucking respect. Wish I had bought them a bottle of vodka in Szczecin at that time, but if they visit us again, I will not forget about it, for sure..
