Lucifuge
"Monoliths of Wrath"
Dying Victims Prod. 2023
If anyone hasn't
encountered the name of Lucifuge before, they're either blind and deaf or
living in a cave. The Germans have been on the scene for a good six years and
have been releasing albums with truly enviable regularity. "Monoliths of
Wrath" is the fifth full-length from their camp and is a consistent
continuation of the style accompanying the band on previous recordings. So what
we have here is, so called, retro metal, the main ingredient of which is
thrash, spiced with just the right amount of black metal infiltration and even
a drip of classic heavy metal. You won't find racing here, the pace of the
composition is kept at a trot rather than a gallop for the most part, and the
main emphasis is on chords that cut deep like a freshly purchased razor blade.
Yes, you have to admit that the guitarists know their instruments very well and
spend a lot of time with them, which results on "Monoliths of Wrath"
in a lot of original chords and melodies making quite a havoc in the skull. Of
course, the rhythmic way of riffing here reeks strongly of the classics of the
German scene, but I consider this a compliment rather than the complaining of
an old grump. It's also impossible not to notice a few tricks associated with
our native Kat. But, as the musician himself, whose name I don't want to
mention, said, even Metallica rips off from them. The songs of Lucifuge are not
even remotely original, but they perfectly recreate the atmosphere of the
second half of the eighties, which is probably helped by the precisely
selected, organic, slightly dirty sound. Besides, listening to these songs I
have an unmistakable impression, as if the gentlemen, even while recording this
material, had a big banana on their faces, because no one can deny the
sincerity of their compositions. Add to this rough vocals and truly remarkable
solo parts, and there you have Lucifuge, a band that doesn't give a damn about
modern technological progress or the search for the avant-garde. These types of
albums are great to listen to, not only under a glass of vodka, but even during
ordinary household chores. Because it is simple music and meditation is not
required. To all retro metal fans, I definitely recommend it.
