Sam rzut oka na okładkę nowego albumu nieznanego mi
dotychczas Mesmur, przypominającą w pierwszej chwili klimatem prace Zdzisława
Beksińskiego, oraz fakt, iż płytę tę wydaje Aesthetic Death, były wystarczającą
zachętą do sprawdzenia jego zawartości. Z góry mogłem jednak zakładać, że nie
będzie to czas stracony, i po raz kolejny się nie myliłem. Mimo iż zespół
istnieje już równo dekadę, a „Chthonic” jest jego czwartym dużym wydawnictwem,
to zbytniej popularności, przynajmniej w znanych mi kręgach, dotychczas nie
osiągnął. A szkoda, bo jest to naprawdę muzyka nieprzeciętna. Funeral Doom. Te
dwa słowa na niektórych działają jak miód na misia, innych odstraszają.
Osobiście stoję tu nieco w rozkroku, więc niezmiernie cieszy mnie fakt, że
nagrania te spełniają moje wszelkie wobec rzeczonego gatunku wymagania. Może
dlatego, iż sporo w nich naleciałości z boskiego Esoteric, który to wielbię
bezgranicznie. Amerykanie, Australijczyk i Włoch, bo z tych państw wywodzą się
muzycy, w podobny sposób budują, nie tylko grobowy, ale pełen tajemnic i magii
klimat, poprzez wzbogacanie maksymalnie ciężkich akordów wszelkiego rodzaju ornamentami.
Powolne uderzenia w struny prowadzą chwilami swoisty dialog z drugą gitarą,
bardziej melancholijną i śpiewną, a pojawiające się, śmiało stosowane tajemnicze
dźwięki powodują, że muzyka Mesmur przenosi nas do innego świata. Świata w
którym panuje żywy mrok, pulsujący pięknem hipnotyzującym bardziej niż tysiące barw.
Nie jest to jedynie granie jednowymiarowe. Sporo smaczków skrytych jest w głębi
i wyłapanie każdego z nich to zadanie dla cierpliwych. Muzycy czerpią
inspiracje nie tylko od ojców funeral doom. Na „Chthonic” znajdziemy także elementy
dość daleko odbiegające od ekstremy, sięgające muzyki awangardowej a nawet
progresywnej. Rzecz w tym, że wszystko zostało tutaj bardzo naturalnie
połączone w jedną spójną całość. Poza standardowym instrumentarium,
niebagatelną rolę odgrywają w tych kompozycjach partie syntezatorowe oraz
smyczkowe, bardzo intensywnie działające na wyobraźnię i podkreślające nastrój
poszczególnych fragmentów. Melodie Mesmur potrafią dzięki temu równie mocno
czarować co przerażać, tak samo jak, niejednokrotnie nakładające się na siebie,
linie wokalne, dodatkowo podkreślane różnymi efektami. Nie bez znaczenia
pozostaje także brzmienie, w jakie zespół ubrał swoje pomysły. Wszystko brzmi
tutaj bardzo selektywnie a zarazem masywnie i czysto. „Chthonic” to, nie licząc
krótkich instrumentali na rozpoczęcie i zakończenie płyty, tylko trzy
kompozycje trwające około czterdziestu minut. Powiem szczerze, dla mnie jest to
zdecydowanie za mało. Nie miałbym nic przeciwko, gdyby album ten trwał dwa razy
tyle, bo za każdym razem gdy zaczynam go słuchać wpadam w czarną dziurę i
zostaję brutalnie wybudzony przez zapadającą nagle ciszę. Oczarował mnie ten
krążek. Dlatego też od dziś Mesmur trafia na moją krótką listę zespołów z
szufladki funeral doom, których poczynania śledził będę na bieżąco.

A mere glance at
the cover art of the new album by the hitherto unknown Mesmur, reminding me at
first of the works of Zdzislaw Beksinski in terms of atmosphere, plus the fact
that the album is being released by Aesthetic Death, were enough incentive to
check out its contents. However, I could assume in advance that it wouldn’t be waste
of time, and once again I wasn’t wrong. Despite the fact that the band has been
around for even a decade, and "Chthonic" is its fourth full-lenght,
it hasn't so far achieved much popularity, at least in the circles I know. And
that's a pity, because this is truly unremarkable music. Funeral Doom. These
two words act like honey on a bear to some people, while scaring others away.
Personally, I stand somewhat between here, so I am extremely pleased that these
recordings meet all my requirements for the genre in question. Maybe it's
because they have a lot of influences from the divine Esoteric, which I adore
indefinitely. Americans, an Australian and an Italian, because the musicians come
from these countries, in a similar way build the atmosphere of, not only grave,
but full of mystery and magic, by enriching the maximum heavy chords with all
kinds of ornaments. Slow strikes on the strings lead at times a kind of
dialogue with the other guitar, more melancholic and singing, and the emerging,
boldly applied mysterious sounds make Mesmur's music move us to another world.
A world in which there is a vivid darkness, pulsing with a beauty that
mesmerizes more than thousands of colors. This is not just one-dimensional
playing. Quite a few flavors are hidden in the depths and catching each of them
is a task for the patient. The musicians draw inspiration not only from the
fathers of funeral doom. On "Chthonic" we can also find elements
quite far from the extremes, reaching into avant-garde and even progressive
tunes. The thing is that everything here has been combined very naturally into
one coherent whole. In addition to the standard instrumentation, a considerable
role is played in these compositions by synthesizer and string parts, very
intensely working on the imagination and emphasizing the mood of individual
fragments. Thanks to this, Mesmur's melodies can be as much enchanting as
frightening, as can the vocal lines, often overlapping, additionally emphasized
by various effects. The sound into which the band has dressed its ideas is also
not without significance. Everything here sounds very selective and at the same
time massive and clean. "Chthonic" is, not counting the short
instrumentals to start and end the album, only three compositions lasting about
forty minutes. I'll be honest, for me this is far too little. I wouldn't mind
if the album lasted twice as long, because every time I start listening to it I
fall into a black hole and am violently awakened by the sudden silence. I am enchanted by this album. Therefore, from now on Mesmur goes on my
short list of funeral doom bands I'm following on
a regular basis.
