Na nowy album od Phobocosm czekałem w tym roku jak
popierdolony. Jest to bowiem zespół, który mieści się w mojej ścisłej czołówce,
który nigdy mnie nie zawiódł, i od którego zawsze, mimo iż mam wysokie wobec
nich wymagania, dostaję to, czego oczekuję. Zakładam, że każdy kto ten tekst
czyta, wie kto zacz, i jakiekolwiek wykłady biograficzne są w tym przypadku nie
na miejscu. Przejdę zatem od razu do meritum. Okładka. Ona już w zasadzie mówi
sama za siebie. Utrzymana w podobnej konwencji co poprzednie, bardzo dosadnie sugerująca
obrazem to, co możemy znaleźć w warstwie muzycznej „Gateway”. I tak faktycznie
jest. Nowy materiał Kanadyjczyków to w bardzo prostej linii kontynuacja ich
własnego, wykreowanego na naukach profesorów z Immolation stylu. Stylu, nawet
jeśli silnie nawiązującego do pierwowzoru, to jednak doskonale rozpoznawalnego
i posiadającego własne oblicze. I nawet fakt, że wokale Etienne na nowych
nagraniach jak nigdy wcześniej przypominają Dolanowy styl, a nawet i barwę,
niczego w tym temacie nie zmienia. Phobocosm to maszyna do zabijania riffami. Masywnymi,
w zmieniającym się często tempie, od niemal doomowego po blastujące, jednak
cały czas skupiona na sile uderzenia. Jednocześnie muzycy nie zapominają o
melodii. Miażdżące harmonie kruszą kości na miazgę, a jednocześnie wkręcają się
w głowę tak mocno, że wyzbyć się ich nie sposób, i otumaniają swoją nutą niemal
do nieprzytomności. Z każdym kolejnym odsłuchem materiał ten coraz bardziej
przypomina pijawkę, która za nic w świecie nie chce się od was odczepić. Ta wspomniana idealna równowaga między
brutalnością, ciężarem, a chwytliwością jest w przypadku Phobocosm ich znakiem
firmowym, i geniuszem (tak, nie waham się użyć tego słowa) na miarę Bolt
Thrower. To właśnie dzięki takim zespołom death metal jest gatunkiem, który uznaje
za supremacyjny. Ja nie jestem w stanie doszukać się na „Gateway” najmniejszych
rys. Brzmienie tych nagrań jest idealnie ciężkie, organiczne, a zarazem
klarowne. Phobocosm podążają na własny sposób ścieżką wskazaną przez ikonę
gatunku, nie oglądając się na konkurencję czy panujące obecnie trendy. „Gateway”
to prawdziwy buldożer i pożeracz umysłów, death metal w najwyższej z możliwych
jakości. Nie mieć tej płyty na pólce, mieniąc się zarazem maniakiem metalu
śmierci, to ewidentny oksymoron. Potęga!

I’ve been
waiting for Phobocosm’s new album like crazy this year. This is a band that
ranks among my absolute favorites, one that has never disappointed me and
always delivers what I expect, even though I have high demands of them. I
assume that everyone reading this knows who they are, and any biographical
lectures are out of place here. So I'll get straight to the point. The cover.
It basically speaks for itself. Maintained in a similar style to the previous
ones, it very bluntly suggests what we can find in the musical layer of
“Gateway”. And that's exactly how it is. The Canadians' new material is a very
straightforward continuation of their own style, created based on the teachings
of the professors from Immolation. A style that, even if strongly reminiscent
of the original, is nevertheless perfectly recognizable and has its own
identity. And even the fact that Etienne's vocals on the new recordings resemble
Dolan's style and even timbre like never before doesn’t change anything in this
regard. Phobocosm is a killer riffing machine. Massive, often changing tempo,
from almost doomy to blasting, but always focused on the power of the impact.
At the same time, the musicians don’t forget about melody. The crushing
harmonies grind bones to pulp, while at the same time getting stuck in your
head so firmly that it is impossible to get rid of them, and they stupefy you
with their tunes almost to the point of unconsciousness. With each subsequent
listen, this material increasingly resembles a leech that refuses to let go of
you for anything in the world. This
perfect balance between brutality, heaviness, and catchiness is Phobocosm's
trademark and genius (yes, I don't hesitate to use that word) on par with Bolt
Thrower. It is thanks to bands like this that death metal is a genre I consider
supreme. I can't find the slightest flaw in “Gateway.” The sound of these
recordings is perfectly heavy, organic, and at the same time clear. Phobocosm are
marching their own way the path once shown by the icon of the genre, without
looking back at the competition or current trends. “Gateway” is a real
bulldozer and mind-devourer, death metal of the highest possible quality. Not
having this album on your shelf while calling yourself a death metal maniac is
a clear oxymoron. Killer!
