A review of Reckless "Sharp Magik Steel"

Reckless

"Sharp Magik Steel"

Dying Victims Prod. 2023

If Reckless come from Colombia, they are released by Dying Victims and the band members hide under such pseudonyms as Metalbringer or Rites666, then I don't ask unnecessary questions, I just immediately throw such an album into the player. And from the first tunes I feel like I'm driving a famous plutonium-powered DeLorean model and moving back to the 80s. I know, I'm old and nothing will probably surprise me anymore, but the way this label scouts all over the world for bands, whose members seem to have been hibernating for the last forty years, qualifies as some kind of conspiracy with the Devil and arouses great admiration in me. Reckless is almost a ripped alive from a bygone era creature, whom concepts such as progress, technical innovations and being up-to-date have completely missed. "Sharp Magik Steel" is more than half an hour of truly old-school speed metal, of the kind that the Horny One brought to life. This album contains such a dose of energy, great riffs and wonderfully flowing solos that a strong coffee or other type of energy drinks is unnecessary. The word "metal" has incredibly expanded its meaning over the years, evolved, entered into intercourse with other genres. This is both good and bad, but I'm not going to write elaborations on it now. However, I bet that in the hearts of those who got into this stream when the scene was revolutionized by Slayer, Venom or Dark Angel, metal will always remain metal. The one, irreplaceable. It is for such people that Reckless' debut album is intended. Why the hell would anyone want any experiments, twisted structures, keyboard backgrounds or howling women. The Colombians know that to play true, heart gripping metal all you need are harsh vocals, guitars and a rhythm section. If you feel the vibe and have the inspiration, albums like "Sharp Magik Steel" are born without pain. And then they flog with razor-sharp chords and bring a nostalgic tear to your eye. Please take a look at the cover, look at the logo. No second bottom here, everything is laid out on a tray. And you either grab it like a wolf for a sheep, or pass by indifferently. Truly I tell you, Reckless have recorded great material, which can be put on the shelf next to the well-known and loved classics without shame. I'm all in. True Metal Forever!
