Vengeance
"Sewer Surge"
Dying Victims
Prod. 2023
Vengeance is not
a very original name. There were, or still are, at least a dozen of bands
playing under the name, although none of them has ever particularly conquered
the world. This Vengeance was born on Polish soil, and the gentlemen known for
Armagh or Black Hosts had their share in the act of birth. If the publisher of
their debut album is Dying Victims Productions, then we should already know
what kind of music we will find on "Sewer Surge". Well, and it's hard
to miss here, because this album is seven speed / heavy metal tracks, lasting
together just over half an hour. Those who are familiar with the just-mentioned
Armagh, know perfectly well that Galin Soulreaper's technical skills, and his
love for the classics, guarantee quality right from the start. At the same
time, there is no reason to expect anything revealing or surprising from these
recordings. The material is remarkably catchy, one might even say blockbuster.
In fact, from the first listening we know whether we will become its slaves or
not. There is a natural sincerity and joy of playing that oozes from these
compositions, and listening to practically any randomly selected song, I can
even see the musicians playing it smiling broadly at each other. You can almost
dance to the opening track "Attack from the Gutter" for good measure.
This doesn't mean, however, that it's a mellow creation, because there's a good
dose of thrashiness here as well. The gentlemen, however, reach deeper into the
classics, I would even say to the bands from the first half of the eighties,
such as Angel Witch, Diamond Head or Venom. Everything, of course, at a
slightly higher speed, making this refreshed recipe a great listen. Vocally,
it's old-school, with declamatory elements and the obligatory choruses and
squeals. So will our countryman Vengeance conquer the world? Definitely not,
because I'm convinced that "Sewer Surge" will mainly go under the
thatches of those who still wear denim jackets, white trainers and, more than
once, a mustache and a poodle haircut. They will undoubtedly make proper use of
this album. For the rest of you, however, I also recommend checking out these
recordings, as they are a piece of really good speed / heavy metal.
