Jedynym materiałem Zgniłego, jaki w życiu słyszałem,
było ich debiutanckie demo, które wyszło na świat… cholera, trzynaście lat
temu. Szmat czasu. Kompletnie nie pamiętam tamtej produkcji, a skoro tak, to
pewnie zbyt wielkiego wrażenia na mnie nie zrobiła. Przez ten czas nieco się
chyba w zespole zmieniło, mimo iż w zasadzie to nadal przede wszystkim projekt
Andreasa Olssona, który przy nagraniach najnowszego materiału dokoptował sobie
do składu dwóch kolegów z Infuneral na wokale. A dlaczego mniemam, iż coś się
ruszyło? Bo „Death Darkness Decay” to materiał, który kopie dupę aż miło, więc
gdyby rzeczona demówka była przynajmniej w połowie tak dobra, to bym jej nie
zapomniał. Putrified gra death metal, ale nie taki typowy ze Szwecji.
Zdecydowanie więcej w tych utworach luzu i melodii oraz chwytliwości. Tak, groove
jest zdecydowanie ich sporą zaletą. Druga sprawa, że pan Szwed unika
schematyczności i bardzo płynnie porusza się między tempem średnim,
powiedziałbym, że wikińskim, a od niego odskoczniami, częstując przy okazji
całą gamą zadziornych akordów i partii solowych o silnie klasycznym wydźwięku.
Najbliższe porównanie, jakie przychodzi mi do głowy to Amon Amarth po ostrym
liftingu. Tylko proszę się nie śmiać. Zamiast tego wytnijcie ze Sztokholmskiej
ekipy całą słodycz i sztampowość, a dodajcie odrobinę mroku i ciężaru. Wychodzi
z tego naprawdę zapamiętywany materiał o dużej sile nośnej. Praktycznie w
każdej z sześciu kompozycji czuje się ten północny ziąb, i w każdej znajdziemy
riff, który potem kręci się w głowie i nie chce z niej wylecieć. No żeby nie
być gołosłownym, posłuchajcie sobie, na ten przykład, „Locus Temple”. Nie dacie
rady stać nieruchomo już od samego początku, a harmonie w tym utworze zmieniają
się przynajmniej cztery razy. Wspomniałem o Amon Amarth, ale inspiracji w tej
muzyce jest o wiele więcej, bo Putrified Ameryki bynajmniej nie odkrywają.
Choćby patent a’la Immolation w „The Sphere of Man” genialnie wpasowany w całość.
Tudzież pożyczka od Edge of Sanity na otwarcie „Vermin”. Albo wokalne zakrzyki
w stylu Bolzer, w kilku miejscach. Ale najważniejsze, że krążek ten ma
odpowiednią moc. Mimo tej chwytliwości, do której nawiązywałem powyżej, jest to
bezapelacyjnie album deathmetalowy w każdym calu. Na pewno sporą jego zaletą
jest też brzmienie. Masywne, kapkę przybrudzone, jednak na tyle czytelne, że
żaden szczegół nie umknie naszej uwadze. W dobie wydawnictw, które często nie
pozostawiają w głowie zbyt wiele, lub szybko idą w zapomnienie, Putrified
serwuje śmierćmetalowe przeboje na wiele wieczornych odsłuchów. Widać nowe logo
na okładce „Death Darkness Decay” to nie przypadek, a nowe otwarcie. Wyszła
chłopakom ta płyta, nie ma co. Mówiąc po angielsku „Jestem cały w”.

The only
Putrified material I've ever heard in my life was their debut demo, which came
out... damn, thirteen years ago. It’s a while. I completely don't remember that
production, and since, it probably didn't impress me too much. I guess things
have changed a bit in the band over that time, even though it's actually still
primarily a project of Andreas Olsson, who, while recording the latest
material, co-opted two of his colleagues from Infuneral for vocals. And why do
I think something has improved? Because "Death Darkness Decay" is
material that kicks ass all the way, so if the demo in question had been at
least half as good, I wouldn't have forgotten it. Putrified plays death metal,
but not the typical kind of Swedish one. There's definitely more ease, melody
and catchiness in these songs. Yes, groove is definitely their big advantage.
The other thing is that Mr. Swede avoids schematicism and moves very smoothly
between a medium tempo, I would say a Viking one, and spurts away from it, frequenting serving a whole range of feisty
chords and solo parts with strongly classical overtones. The closest comparison
I can think of is Amon Amarth after a sharp facelift. Just please don't laugh.
Instead, cut out out all the sweetness and stiffness from the Stockholm band’s
music, and add a bit of darkness and heaviness. What emerges then is truly
memorable material with a lot of carrying power. Virtually in each of the six
compositions you feel that northern chill, and in each you will find a riff
that then gets in your head and doesn’t want to fly out of it. Well, not to be
lip service, listen to yourself, for example, "Locus Temple". You
won't be able to stand still from the very beginning, and the harmonies in this
song change at least four times. I mentioned Amon Amarth, but there are many
other inspirations in these tunes, as Putrified by no means discover America.
If only the patent a'la Immolation in "The Sphere of Man" brilliantly
fitted into the whole. Or the borrowing from Edge of Sanity in the opening part
of "Vermin." Or the Bolzer-style vocal screams here and there. But
most importantly, the album has the right amount of power. Despite the
catchiness I alluded to above, this is unquestionably a deathmetal album in
every sense. Certainly its sound is also a considerable advantage. Massive, a
little dirty, but clear enough that no detail escapes our attention. In the era
of releases that often don't leave much in the mind, or go quickly into
oblivion, Putrified serves up death-metal hits for many an evening's listening.
You can see the new logo on the cover of "Death Darkness Decay" is
not a coincidence, but a new opening. The guys came rally did their best with
this album, no question about it. I’m all in!
